I was thinking about getting Sky Life satellite tv to replace the cable tv I have at the moment. One question; does anyone know if the National Geographic channel ( my cable tv does not get it ) is in English with Korean sub-titles or is dubbed into Korean.
Thanks.

The program I'm watching now on "NGC Korea" (channel 402) is in English with Korean subtitles. However, I'm pretty sure I have seen some programs on there that were entirely in Korean... The neighboring "Animal Planet" and "Adventure One" channels are wholly in English, if that's your thing... Hope that helps Cool

Sky Life? This wouldn't by any chance be affiliated with Sky in Britain, would it?

Oh, to be able to watch Nationwide matches in Korea...

i am getting sky life this very afternoon, but since I teach till 9:30 tonight and 10:00pm tomorrow I won't be able to watch much of it to let anyone know.

I think I get a bi-weekly program guide with it. All in Korean of course, but it helps that I can read it and will only wathc about a dozen of the 70 odd programs.

I don't think they are affiliated with sky. But they do have starsports asia, which my current company ditched. They show six nations and tri-nations, plus super 12 rugby games live or delayed which is cool.

Apart from that they only show the Korean sport channels I think.

You get CNN and about a kajillion movie channels (all with Korean subtitles, natch). And Arirang, of course. That's about it Englishwise. If you speak Japanese, you will no doubt find the NHK channel useful. Laughing

The service in my apartment is a special deal through the hagwon, so I don't know what the open-market price is; I don't think it's very much by Western standards.

ok,

I got it put in.

It was 88,000 installation. A bit pricey but I make enough so thats no prob. It works out at 18,000 for the family deal (76 chanells). Plus I got Catch On and Catch On plus (two good movie chanells). They bump it up to 26,000 a month.

In terms of English chanells that I can think of now it has:
all the movies chanells (a lot of them)
Star Sports
CNN (better than BBC in my opnion and I am from the Commonwealth, better sports coverage, for example they have 30 minutes sports news segments, unlike BBC who has about 15 minutes every 3 days it seems)
Adventure One
Animal Planet
Arirang

It also has chanells that play sitcoms like Friends, Married with Children etc amongst regular Korean shows
For music it has:
chanell V Korea
Wave TV
KMTV
m-net
POP-TV

It also has 40 audio chanells (sound only, no picture)
They include club dance music
sonic music (trance, mello stuff)
hip hop
contemporary rock
jazz
urban jazz
classic
and a myriad of others

It has an interactive type menu and you can pop up the upcoming shows for the next 24 hours on every chanell. It is very handy knowing what will come on at certain times, to plan your day or week.

plus you get a bi-weekly guide which has almost every chanells full listing.

hope that helps.

I sound like a SkyLife rep or something!

Do you get BS2 - on Sky Life?

I am a sumo fan and it has the English commentary on BS2.

If it is there, I am sold.

Let them try to push me out of the dojo!

STAR TV on SKYLIFE?

Dream the impossible dream.

You're in the sticks, so SKYLIFE will do you fine, but it's the biggest ripoff KNOWN TO MAN for anyone where the cable system offers most of the same channels, and for up to 24,000 won less.

No, you don't. The biggots who run Korena cable and Sky Life don't carry EITHER BS station. I guess that happend a year go.
The only way to get the BS' and a slew of ultra cool Japanese channels is to go with a parabolic (sic) antennae.

Good luck finding a Korean who speaks English who will even know anything about it. I could ask a friend in Seoul about it, but that still won't help you if you're outside of Seoul - trying to find the company to install it.

I miss BS 2- which was what I watched almost exclusively between 1998-2000 in Korea.

Korea - the entertainment wasteland

SKYLIFE yoy have to buy the equipment for somewhere shy of 200, 000 won. It's yours for life. If you dont' the bill goes up a bit as you "rent it."

Monthly bill for ALL major channels (Catch On and Catch On-plus, the sports and docu-channels) is shy of 40, 000 won.

Cable is 6,000 won with the Catch On channels, and depending on your city - you might have to levy a refundable 80,000 won deposit. Most cities have ditched the deposit but some want to make sure you have a bank account and dough in it.

Some cable systems change things on a whim and some offer crappier channel selection (like 19 thousand home shopping options but no foreign news channels), and that's where Sky Life has its purpose.

Oh SKY LIFE allow for 5.0 channel seperation on Catch On movies that offer it. Just rent the Dvds months earlier, in better versions and for less. 2.0 stereo is fine and the 5.0 is maybe 5% of all films shown on the Catch On channels.

SKY LIFE IS THE BIGGEST RIP OFF KNOWN TO MAN.

Joe has said htis on many threads (unelss mods deleted the threads) and you can do a search and see more detailed explinations.

Joe doesn't want people to waste theire time and money on a beast that doesn't offer much in the way of difference to local cable.

Joe wishes he went with a parabolic antennae and cable.

Dong-Ah carries FRIENDS and that's available on Cable and cable runs as low as 6,000 won. Animal Planet is carried on many Korean cities' cable systems, as is Arirang - which is sh@t and should be a mark against Sky Life for carrying it.

Duno about MWC (never liked it) but Joe thinks it's carried on a channel most cable systems have. He saw it surfing channels one while staying in a Yeogwan in December and that was basic Korean cable.

Pop tv?

You sure? What channel? It's not on my guide nor my system, unelss it was added in the last week.

Cable offers MTV Korea which shows more foreign music videos (read: western) but still sucks (silent chick staring into a camera for 9 hours anyone?)

Channel V Korea does offer other Asian music videos (Japan, Hong Kong, etc.) but so late at night it's not worth trying to find them.

KMTV sucks. I thought we only got MNET - some channels must have been added. Since I only watch wrestling and NHK I need to surf around. Might be a recent addition.

You forgot Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network and Disney (though Disney is on cable) - all English with Korean subs.

You do, which is sad, since SKY LIFE is a rip off.

Have you experience with Korean cable? If so, compare the two and share your thoughts.

I hate the baztards...

I had it for a weekend, and got rid of it. My apartment complex has a "Deal" we can sign up for.

First of all, they would only install if I signed up with direct-withdrawl from the bank. More on that in a minute.

There were tons of channels, but most everything was in Korean. Even animal planet, which pissed me off. I didn't think it was worth it to pay 28,000 won for the first 6 months (including the 10,000 box rental fee for 6 months). I wanted to cancel, and told the sales guy downstairs here (they had a kiosk selling to all in the building).

The guy selling it said I'd have to talk to the install guy to cancel. He said I'd have to pay him 100,000 won to have it taken out. And skylife has this weird disclaimer on their board (and in korean on what you sign) which says they WILL NOT cancel if you have any outstanding bills.... they just keep running up more bills every month until you pay it all, then cancel. This would be totally illegal in the US, but of course, this is Korea.

I had an argument with the sales guy, who refused to take the box back, and finally found a central office number to complain. They didnt' even have me on record yet, and said it would only be 7,000 to disconnect, since I had taken out the box myself (saving some cash). She instructed me to give 7,000 won and the box to the sales guy. I did that. The install guy had totally made up the 100,000 fee, and was trying to pull a fast one on me. The central office had no idea about it.

After all of this, and the lady at the Central office assured me that I'm out of the deal, I get a bill in the mail for another 9,000 won this month (for the box I gave back, I presume).

I got the bill in the mail because I didn't trust them with having a direct-withdraw on my account, so I cancelled and went to a new bank. Plus I had to change accounts in the near-future anyway. They had tried to auto-bill me at my old bank, but the account is inactive. That's why they mailed me a bill.

I e-mailed skylife's help desk with a scan of the bill, and told them I shouldn't have to pay for anything. (I e-mailed twice, no reponse).

I'll never pay.
