Never know how to quite answer that one, which I've gotten asked several times by elementary and middle school boys over the years. I usually just say, well, don't say it, it's very bad English, as bad as anything you can say in Korean. But I can't blame their curiosity. Strange even those with next to no English know "puck you".... so common in movies.

Well, in the otherwise HEAVILY DULL Side by Side which seems inflicted upon this school I've 'inherited' the last two months we encountered 'vacuuming' which none of the 12 year olds understood. So I prounounced it 'VCKyooming in an elated looking for a way out of this nowhere dullsville way and even the most shy (especially) lit up at this affrontery. So, at least here in Ulsan, they KNOW that 'VCK you!' is some sort of Celtic curse that repels the emerging dragon and curses it to its hole! (as well as covering it with shite!). I think it's rather oversensitive given the broader picture of how grand it is to be here, doing this job, to complain BUT I did hear a 14 year old woman on the street call out 'VCK you!' at my 'heroically' toting a box home on my shoulder as if I was heroic, so she had to battleship my broadside, being in middle school and burdoned with homework, god bless her! (she had to do it!)

I just act like I don't know what they are talking about. That confuses them.

I had to teach that for 18 months. AAARRRGGGHHHH I hated it, except it wasn't too bad for grammar and sentance structure(like they need more of that though). Very Happy

With one particularly good middle school class, I showed them the equivalent gesture in Korea- make a fist and stick your thumb out between fingers. ( This was after class, and I made it clear that I was only explaining)

Once they realized how strong the word is they stopped using it in my classroom, and I think I became the coolest teacher they'd ever had. When you were in middle school didn't you love teeachers that treated you like you were an adult?

I actually taught pronunciation with that one with a class of 4 middle school boys! It's NOT a university (Puck-a U)!!! I just prayed that my director didn't stop by!!

Really, if a student asks me, I tell them straight out...it means sex! And DON'T use it in front of parent or teachers!!! Why lie!?

No, if you pretend not to know what she's talking about when she says,"Puck", she'll simply assume that you're bad in bed and go in search or someone else. Wink

Yeah, I've never liked the term "konglish" either. Engrish makes much more sense.

English makes sense, but it would take a keen observer to get the point. Also, we would have to distinguish Korean Engrish from Japanese Engrish.

Konglish is the widely accepted word in Korea. In Japan, I think it's Janglish.

Cool Well, if you wish to correct your pupil's pronunciation of his hilarious
epithet, have him place his two index fingers in each side of his mouth and
stretch it when saying "Puck you!" This exercise helps with all "F" words. Cool
