|
|
I'm supposed to give a short (~5 minute) presentation about western table manners. I'm just looking for a couple more things that might be useful to say. I already have the following:
1) Dont reach across the table!
2) Dont talk with your mouth full!
3) Say good things about the food!
4) Only eat from your plate! Each person has their own food!
5) Dont rest your elbows on the table!
Oh, and it's for public elementary students, and my co-teacher may or may not translate, so simple suggestions that I can reinforce with pictures would be best. |

Don't play with your food!
Don't point with silverware (especially not knives, lol!)
You do not have to finish all the food on your plate, but if you want seconds, you have to finish the food on your plate first.
Don't wear a hat/cap/coat.
Put a napkin on your chair if you want to leave for a moment.
This is an interesting topic, not just for your class. |

Don't stuff a softball-size ball of rice and galbi wrapped in lettuce into your mouth. |

We need to clarify what kind of manners. Daily manners...there really aren't any. Proper table manners...way too many to list.
I usually don't follow any unless it's out of respect. |

Don't lick your knife, bowl or plate clean!
If you are picking your teeth with a toothpick, cover your mouth/toothpicking action with the whole of your other hand. But who does this at the table any more anyway??? |

My parents were very strict when it came to table manners, so I practice all of these daily.
Here's another one, never drink out of the bowl |

fork and knife next to each other at about the 4:30 point on the plate indicate you are finished.
fork and knife on either side of the plate, with each utensil crossing onto the plate, heads facing each other, not touching each other though (like connecting them is an invisible horizontal line that bisects the plate) indicates you are pausing
utensils: start on the outside, work your way in
don't blow on your soup to cool it

At the end of the meal place the knife and forks together in a 45 degree facing away from you |

You guys do all that? The only thing I keep in mind is to chew with my mouth shut and to not talk with my mouth full. Sometimes the latter is difficult when some people constantly ask me questions right as I'm taking a bite. |

Some of us didn't have trust funds or mommy and daddy to pay our expenses, so we get away with having some personality and not following every rule. |

Someone needs a hug.
As to the OP, day to day, I would say chew with your mouth closed; don't talk with food in your mouth; keep your elbows off the table; also, let left handed people have a corner seat so they're not busting elbows with someone else. |
