|
|
Every week I see pictures of diplomats (or their wives) making kimchi, visiting folk villages, socializing at cocktail parties, receiving awards, etc.
Why is this? What do they have to do with the average person here? Why is any of this newsworthy?? They are just civil servants after all!
Why not more photos of the average people here in Korea (natives or expat/ legal or illegal), and their stories? Wouldn't that be more interesting? Why all the emphasis on civil servants? Anybody else ever thought about this?? |

Like anonymous civil servants eating kimchi in Ankara to promote awareness?
Both papers (ie Times and Herald) are rags , though I liked Andrei Lenkov's articles on Korea in the Times. |

Lankov is good--also to be found in the higher quality IHT.
Diplomats are the elite, so Koreans like them. Korean daughter wants to marry a Pakistani--oh the shame, but wait, he's the ambassador's son, oh the joy. |

Simple- it doesn't.
For these papers, their "target" audience is the diplomatic/ business community- which is try you see tons of adverts for high-priced apartments in Gangnam an stuff.
I get the impression that they are shooting for the same status as the Financial Times- unfortunately they are shooting too high. |

In 1995, the Times had a picture of many heads of states posing after a conference. Canada's PM, Jean Cretien (sp?) was standing to the right of Bill Clinton, but the listing wrote, "man at the right (of Clinton) is unidentified." I always that it was funny on so many levels; not the least of which was that they had to have known he was not some random guy who walked in off the street. Funnier still was they could identify the leader of Kenya. |

That is funny. Maybe its because Chretien can't speak English either! Or French. |
