So I should be flying out in late January and i'm not sure what to do about my computers. I know i'll be bringing my laptop with me on the plane but I really want to bring my desktop/monitor as well since I just got a new rig and a 28inch monitor. If I packed my second suitcase with my rig/monitor and just filled clothes around them do you think it would be safe for travel or have any idea if this would more than likely be too heavy?
I know alot of people say leave your case at home and take the parts but I don't plan on taking it apart and rebuilding it. Did any of you bring your desktop/monitor with you and if so was it a hassle? |

If you're bringing your laptop my why do you need it?
I just brought my sweet little MacBook, and it's all I would ever need. |

B/c my laptop isn't that great, 1.6ghz core 2 duo, 100gig harddrive 4gigs of ram. Can't game on it or have much storage at all... my desktop however has 1terrabyte of storage, 16gigs of ram, hd4870 etc.. i plan on it being my main source of entertainment at home so I definitely want to bring it.
Oh and I just looked back at my computer shipment invoice... it's 29.5pnds, I guess I would be cutting it close on the weight =( |

I brought my desktop over. Wrapped it in towels and put in checked luggage. No problems except for haveing to lug up it up 5 stairs after an 18 hour flight and a 2 hour drive.
My monitor is 19 inches so I put that in my carry on bag- not sure you can do that with a 28- but I don't think it is a good idea to put a monitor in checked luggage. |

I brought my desktop over - but I left the case and power supply. Rebuilding it is nothing more than a few screws for the mother board and the drives. You'll want a Korean power supply else you'll need one that does 220v AND has the right plug.
Dead weight since you can get one for cheap here. |

OP- I guess for gaming it is different, and I don't really know much about it, so sorry for maybe kind of a dumb question!
I would worry about it being banged up, though. But it seems others have done it and it turned out fine, so maybe you'll be alright. One bit of advice though, don't skimp on the packing. If putting your desktop in with enough clothes and such stuffed around it to keep it safe will put you over the luggage limit, just pay the extra. It's worth it to ensure its' safety and paying extra is cheaper and faster than shipping it over separately. |

Yeah if your desktop is something amazing.. bring the insides. You can bring a motherboard, vid card, memory, hard drives, etc in a fairly small profile box with some foam rather than taking a case. Just buy a new case and power supply for $50 or so. If its mediocre, sell it for what you can get, and buy some stuff here. You might be able to use that stuff for something else to bring with you. |
