Will I be able to use internet banking abroad(outside Korea)? I am particularly interested in being able to transfer funds from a Korean bank account to another Korean bank account. I don't want to find out when it's too late!
So far, my interpretation of what the bank tellers tell me and the reality are different! I don't know whether this is a communication problem, website usability problems or Gremlins in the system.
You'd think they'd hire a competent native speaker to double check their language. It would take a day at most to check the website text, right?
Grrrr. |

i've got internet banking and an international atm card from KEB, and i had/have problems with both of them. apparently the 'international' atm card wasn't international until registered (although they issued me the f-ing thing at the bank knowing i was going abroad) and the internet banking won't work outside of korea for me.
i would suggest going to a branch of your bank with an english speaking teller. maybe there's a branch in itaewon? |

Thanks nomad-ish.
I'm with Nonghyup, maybe it's different for them. Anybody know?
I don't need an international ATM card, just the internet banking. |

I've used Nonghyup internet banking overseas before, so it is not impossible. But there are a few obstacles:
Can you find a computer with windows XP and explorer?
Will that computer let you download all the active X controllers and maybe even Ahnlab virus scan (forgot if that was required)?
Can you erase all that junk if you are on a friends computer?
Is the internet speed enough to download all the pictures of bouncing balls and stuff on the bank webpage without timing out (Thailand is often too slow)?
Does the computer have Korean so you can see the error messages which will inevitably come up?
Are all of your 3 passwords, secret cards, software pin etc. current and not about to be canceled because you are a foreigner or because of inactivity?
Once I got all these taken care of, then yes, I have used Nonghyup internet banking overseas.
If you are taking you own laptop, and you test everything before you go, then it should be fine if you find fast internet. |

Do you have a laptop? If so, download the internet banking programme to the machine, take it with you, and you can transfer fund using it.
That's what I did earlier this year when I went to HK and took my little netbook with me.
You are supposed to be able to store your security information on a USB stick, but I've not managed that... would be useful if I could.. |

Most important - Copy that NPKI directory from the c:/Program Files/NPKI/ directory onto a USB stick, this is from the computer you use to log onto your online banking.
Just copy the whole NPKI and paste it into the root of your USB stick, so after you've copied it you see the NPKI folder. You can try to decipher what the purpose of each folder in that NPKI folder does, but it's pretty convoluted.
Your next job is to find a guy who's kind enough to let you use a Windows based computer and doesn't mind all the junk Korean websites love to download and install.
I know banking works for XP and Vista. Not sure about Windows 7. But knowing Korean businesses' love affair with ActiveX, there are bound to be some issues for the first 6 months with Windows 7.
Aside - it's going to take a lot to redesign these Korean websites to drop this ridiculous dependence on Microsoft...
And the government has got to drop this law requiring ActiveX for financial transactions. |
