I have ADD (ADHD); Can I get an E-2 visa?

There is absolutely no reason why that should disqualify me. I would just keep it to myself, but I'm on Adderall XR, and so I will test positive for amphetamines.

You might want to post this in the job related forum or general discussion forum. Down here in the travel forum, it is likely to be overlooked.

That being said, I probably would discuss it with my future employer. ADD is a "mental health disorder". I would probably lie about it myself on the self medical and stop taking the meds for a while before my test.

since they only drug test you using your urine.. amphetamines only last up to 72 hours there.. if you can not take it for 3 days you're good.

but, talk to the reply up says talk to your employer/recruiter about it.

Going off your meds. suddenly is not recommended. It may have adverse effects. There are people with ADD here in Korea that are taking meds and functioning fine. The challenge is, are you able to function well in a work environment? Only you can answer that.

I have a simple solution although you may not like it or it may not work well for you.

I also have ADD, although not ADHD. I started taking ritalin when I was 7 years old and took that or dexadrine until I was 17 years old. I quit taking it against my doctor's advice. This is because I had become concerned about the fact that no one knew what the long term side effects could be. Besides, I did not like the idea of being dependent on a drug.

Unfortunately, my concerns later proved to be well founded. After I quit taking the medicine, I developed nervous tics and later involuntary spasms in my neck, arms, and legs. Fortunately, I only experienced these spasms when I was under a lot of stress or had not slept much. I also had to give up caffeine.

Eventually, I learned from a doctor that a small percentage of people have also had these problems after they quit taking the medication. It is related to the fact that these drugs erode the dopamine channels in your brain.

It has now been 12 years since I quit taking dexadrine. I am happy to say that the spasms no longer occur although I still have a minor nervous tic in my neck that occurs once every few months. More importantly during the last 12 years, I have earned a bachelor of science and a master of science. And now, I am working in Korea at an international school and get 9 full weeks of paid vacation. At some point in the near future, I plan to go back to graduate school and earn a Ph.D.

So, yes, you can survive without medication, but it does take some effort.

Also, I thought I might add that the particular medication you are taking is known to cause liver damage in the long term.

You'll be fine. I too have ADD and didn't have any difficulties getting my visa. Just go off your medication about a day before your test and you'll be fine.

Everybody is different when it comes to ADHD and what may suit one person may not necessarily suit somebody else.

I am not disputing that, but do please take note of my concerns about the long term side effects of these drugs. There have been very few studies on this subject. Yet, millions of people are given these drugs before any consideration is given for other possible therapies or nonstimulant drugs for that matter.

I'm almost positive you won't have to go off your medication. If I remember the article I read correctly, those kinds of prescription drugs will test you positive for amphetamines, but the required confirmation test is much more advanced (spectrum something or other) and differentiates between legal amphetamines and illegal ones like methamphetamine.

btw, if it's SR Ritalin I would definitely talk to a doctor if you decide to take it intermittently.

I am not kidding when I say this but, Koreans will be more anxious to hire you if you have ADD (ADHD).

...if you let them know ... but if you don't, they won't know the difference anyway...

For many jobs, or maybe it is for immigration, you are asked about any mental illnesses. Do NOT admit to anything.
