Authorized Ashtanga teacher, James Butkevich, will be in Seoul to conduct an Ashtanga Yoga workshop from November 14 to November 22.
James has been the director of Ashtanga Yoga Los Angeles, the city's premier Ashtanga school, for the past four years. James was authorized to teach by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois in 2001 and he recently received his Level 2 Authorization. James has spent a total of four years in India, over the course of fourteen separate visits, studying under the tutelage of Guruji and his grandson, Sharath Rangaswamy. He is currently practising the Advanced A series. He is also engaged in the study of Sanskrit and Yoga Philosophy and is well versed in the practice of Pranayama and Hindu rituals. James was the director of Teacher Training at Jivamukti Yoga in New York City in 2000 and has been teaching adjustment workshops for ten years. He has been featured in magazines and on television programs in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
As James esplains, "I want teachers to have the love of God flowing through them to their students. It's all about connecting to God in everything you do. The Ashtanga Yoga system is a moving meditation and prayer. It's a blessing to be a part of this system".
James conducted a workshop in Seoul in October 2007. It was a resounding success and the participants came away fully inspired.
The workshop is open to all. An established Mysore practice is not necessary in order to participate. This is a valuable opportunity to practice with an experienced teacher who learned directly under the guidance of Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. It is also an excellent chance to connect with the Korean Ashtanga community.
Yesterday was the first day of the workshop. It was a lot of fun for everybody involved, and certainly all who participated came away having learned something valuable. The room was packed for the led class. We went through the whole series together; afterwards, it seemed like everybody's faces were a little clearer and their eyes a little brighter. James then talked for about fifteen minutes about the Ashtanga practice in terms of its effect on the body-mind and stressed the importance of maintaining a daily practice. We then had the Adjustment portion of the workshop where we discussed the dynamics of the teacher-student relationship and learned how to guide a student through Surya Namaskar A. We then all sat around and had some food together and continued to talk about the practice. The last portion of the workshop was spent learning about the basics of Sanskrit.
