Wow, that incident made it into the New York Times. Well, in a way, I have to say this is a good thing because too often Korea is off the radar. Now, at least, people can start to get a glimpse of some of the negative parts of reality that also exist here. And maybe, this media attention will also challenge South Korea to change further for the better. |

Many Koreans seem to be so confused by racial issues. The centuries of mistrusting foreigners is now clashing with trendy modern notions of being 'global' and cosmopolitan.
As well, I think many Koreans thought that becoming a global economic power and receiving a lot of temporary and/or permanent workers wouldn't actually involve having to live among these foreign people!
Then there are the Koreans who are tickled to see smiling white people walking around, enjoying Korean food and saying nice things about Korea.......but who would immediately cross the street if they saw a black man walking towards them. |
