I have used the search function, and found several threads which contained some reference to this topic. However, they seem to be full of people disagreeing and contradicting each other. So here goes. Does "most direct flight" mean a non-stop flight? Or does it mean "No, extended lay-over of the NETs choosing, for a little R & R on the way out of K-land"? I don't want an extended lay-over, but non-stop flights for my departure dates are pushing close to double what they paid to get me here. Curious as to other folks experience with this. Thanks.

"Most direct" means the shortest distance travelled... so non-stop flights are the most direct.

If you have to pay for anything over a given amount, then go ahead and get the cheaper flight with layovers. You can show the school the price difference or tell them that they can get the ticket for you.

Why would a public school NET have to pay anything (that will not be reimbursed)?

Because they are now capping the flights at a certain amount.

The school programs. For example EPIK gives you an "exit allowance" of 1.3 million (read air flight).

I know that to fly out in Dec. from Seoul to Japan to LA costs 1800 for a one way, and then until end of Jan. it is $2300. I tried JAL, Korean Air, Asiana and All Nipon. I don't know what it will be when I leave in Sept. next year, but the airlines are raising their rates. American is charging $20 for 1 checked in bag - I'm not sure if the foreign carriers will follow suit- probably they will.
I was told that Dec-Mar is high season and the flights are very expensive until April.

Thank you for your answers. To be more specific, I am independently employed (not EPIK) by a public school, using a 2008 EPIK contract. Meaning, I don't have the entrance/exit allowance of 1.300.000 W I have reimbursement of the "actual purchasing price of the most direct flight available". Now, my contract is up in January, and direct flights to the US are sitting at about $1700-$1800 for that time frame. Now, I'd like to spend five months on ze beach, and let North America thaw a bit before I return. So, my school, hip to the new rules wants to give me 1.300.000, but still wants to see my plane ticket receipts. Now, I would be willing to take 1.300.000 as an "exit allowance" but I want them to piss off about my tickets and leave it to me. I feel like this will come down to my own abilities as a negotiator. Any input?

They will probably say that unless you go directly home, they will not pay or pay a lesser amount.

Not that I agree, but that's what they will try.

Huhhh? There are dozens of flights from ICN to LAX via Tokyo for under 1000 (many around $800). You can get one for $621 via Hawaii.

Could you reserve an eticket, print off the iten. to show them, and then cancel the reservation without paying? Or do they actually want to see credit card slips or something?

You could also just get a fully refundable ticket to appease them and then get the allowance, get a refund, and do as you like.

I am not flying to LAX, and via anywhere is not "the most direct flight available". I might be able to be scandalous with the receipts or a refundable ticket, but I would prefer that it not come to that. I am trying to negotiate the issue in a way that will save everyone involved money. So I am sure my idea will be rejected. The final frustration!

I know a girl who made 2 lay overs on her way home. One in Hawaii (for 7 days) and another in LA (4 days) before going to Dallas. The school liked her very much. lol
