|

I know there are a ton of marriage threads floating around somewhere, but they're usually a foreigner marrying a Korean. Anybody know what the process is for two Americans wanting to get married in Korea? I'm an E-2, he's an F-4 (adoptee, so no family registry). Do we just go to the embassy and fill out a form?
We also want to do a traditional ceremony. I've looked at Korea House and Sungkyungkwan Urim Wedding Hall (Myungryundang). Any other place that offers a traditional ceremony? Can we, as two foreigners, even do something like that?
Any help is appreciated, thanks!! |

We got married a few years ago at the American Embassy but never had a traditional ceremony. Not sure if anything different is required for you, we are both E-2 visa holders. It cost about $100 and took about an hour (mostly because we were waiting our turn) -- had to fill out a few forms and sign away. The only thing is that it's not "legitimate" until you go back to the states and file it. The guy that "married" us told us if we ever lost the two official copies of the certificate, the marriage would basically be void because they don't keep any records.
You can find all the info you need on the American Embassy website, it was really easy to do. |

Check the American Embassy's website and you'll get the procedure there for two Americans marrying in Korea. Marriage cannot be contracted at the embassy so you both must get the required documents authenticated at the embassy and then go to the appropriate Korean government office to register your marriage. After that, you return to the embassy to report that fact.
Here is the official low-down on the whole deal. Good luck to you both in your future together--Congrats! |

As per the legal issues, other posters were accurate, as far as I know.
You can also get the 'traditional' ceremony at almost any hyan-kyo, or traditional Confucian school. There's no problem.
Some places (like Gwangju, Cheollanamdo) had festivals where foreigners could do it for free!! |

You need to go to the US embassy, fill out some forms, go to a gu office, fill out some forms, and go back to the US embassy to fill out more forms. |

Thanks a bunch for the info!!
It sounds like we do basically what everyone does, minus the whole family registry stuff. |

You will do paperwork at the embassy that takes the place of the family registry. |
