I have a job offer in Daejeon. I have only worked in the Seoul area. Does anybody have any good info about this area of Korea ie: clothes shopping, western food, etc?

there have been soooo many threads on Daejeon here latley. Did you not see them?


Anyways the western food sucks there. Not a single Mexican resturant in the whole city. There is an Indian resturant that is OK, but over priced. Got your typical western steak places like TGIF. The Italian food places also are not very good (best places to get Italian is at BON BON a western bar in Timeworld)

Clothes shopping I had a hard time finding western sizes/brands


Some people like Daejeon (clean, low air pollution, nice biking paths) but some people (myself) found it pretty boring after a couple of months. Depends on how old and how many years one has spent in Korea. Many old timers say they like living in Daejeon after living in the rest of Korea. But for a single person in their 20's it might be a little tame

There is, however, a great middle eastern resto in Goong-dong called Ali Baba, cooked by a ..uh... I can't remember where the dude's from, but it's authentic and great. The chef, incidentally, is a visiting scholar at KAIST but cooks part time. haha.

You can go elsewhere for Mexican food if you want it that badly. Seoul has a few good ones, and the one in Songtan is fabulous.

Daejeon is definately a lot slower paced than seoul. you'll find (with the exception of Busan) that the farther south you go, the less western stuff you find. If you don't care about that, it's a nice place. I personally don't go to korea to find western stuff, so it has never bugged me. I don't currently live there, but i have before. I like the less congestion, cleaner air, slower pace.
