|

The exchange rate has been quite bad and I have a substantial amount of won still left. I'm leaving Korea to travel for 9-12 months and want to come back, either to visit or work again. I'm hoping to be able to just leave my won sitting in my Woori Bank account while I'm away. IF possible, I hope to be able to suss out the online banking to be able to transfer it while I'm away but I've had a lot of trouble with the online system as a foreigner. Anyway, my Q. is, is it possible to leave money just sitting here if I don't have an E2 visa, or has anyone done this before? |

It should be fine. I have a friend who has left accounts open for years (he has been away from Korea for lengthy spells) and I have done the same. I am not sure whether each bank has a different policy regarding dormant accounts but if the above two experiences are any indication then you should be okay. For ease of mind I guess you could attempt to set up internet banking so you can keep tabs on things but I am not sure whether this service is available to foreigners. I can tell you that an E2 visa is not a precondition to maintaining a bank account in Korea. |

Yes, it should be fine. I left an open, empty account here for 9 months while I traveled. If your leaving money in it, I suggest getting an account at a bank that will let you access it abroad, if woori won't. A KEB global card will allow you to pull money out at atms. |

Same story here. I was out of country for seven months, had drained my account down to a couple thousand won. It was still there when I got back, money and all. |

I had a KB account closed after I had been gone for 2 years. I went in to deposit when I came back and instead of accepting my money they gave me the 30,000won I left in there almost 2 years earlier. |

Some banks will close your account if there's no activity for certain amount of time. I had an woori account and they told me they close accounts after a year. Not sure what will happen to the money though. |
