I am studying IR and Politics from Univ. of London External Programme and teaching English in Suji this year. I was wondering if anyone knows of if there are any study groups or really just anyone who gets together to talk politics in Seoul?
I've emailed some of the universities and am awaiting a reply, so I will post once I find out, but anyone here know of any? |

Please update this thread when you receive more details. My long term goal is to one day become a diplomat. |

I already have my MA, but this is something that I have studied and will likely be returning to my home country to participate in, so if something does develop I'm interested in participating until I leave in Jan/feb. |

I don't have enough posts to PM
Thank you so much for the very helpful information. Due to the fact that I'm currently in N.America, all my searchs kept bringing a few US programs but those did not look like that great of programs. I really like the Leeds and Sheffield's programs and also the Leicester program. I noticed that most of the admissions requirements for the programs require a degree in a related field... I'm not familar with the UK system or how much they enforce the "related field" requirement. My degree from a U.S. university is in Finance. Any thoughts on if I'll have a difficult time getting into a IR program? Thanks for your help! |

You should be able to PM me straight back from the PM I sent you.
Re: degree prerequisites - these can be ignored if the application is a strong one (obviously this would be different if you wanted to study chemistry or something of a similar nature. What you read as an undergraduate would be a factor in your application but if you demonstrate the sufficient academic capabilities and the required intellectual curiosity for the subject you should be fine ). I'd recommend contacting the universities that you are interested in applying to directly and asking. I suspect that a degree in finance would probably fall under the remit of having read economics. Most IR/politics campus based M.A.s in the UK usually have economics listed amongst the degree requirements so you should be fine. |

Can anyone clarify whether the online/external degree will read: "University of London External" once it is conferred or whether it will be titled "University of London" just like an ordinary brick 'n' mortar degree.
Are Korean employers accepting of online/external Masters degrees?
I know a corporate trainer who has an MBA from Kaplan University and he's making some serious coin from such credential. |

As far as I can remember, it will have on the certificate the 'lead' college (the college that sets and examines the course. In politics/IR case, the lead college is L.S.E.) and then it states that it is a University of London degree. This is, I believe, how it's also written on the certificate when you are awarded a brick and mortar University of London degree. I'm not absolutely sure on all that but that's what I seem to recall being told.
I should make it clear that the UoL external does not offer politics/IR M.A.s. They do offer politics related M.As/M.Sc.s just not outright postgraduate politics/IR degrees. I would keep an eye out as I did read somewhere a while back that L.S.E. are looking to expand on their distance learning program now that they can award degrees themselves. |

Still no reply from the Universities in Seoul. Some have replied telling me to contact the student groups, which I have done, but no reply from them yet.
However, I am pleased by the reaction this thread has received. Is anyone here interested in setting up a study group ourselves? By study group, I mean getting together, drinking beer and discussing current affairs/international politics/things that piss you off about teaching in korea/wonder what would happen if Gaddafi, Kim Jong Il and Ahmadinejad had a love child, etc.?
I live in Suji, so am more than willing to meet on a weekend once or twice a month at a nice bar in Seoul. Anyone else interested? |

Sorry to go off topic, I'm interested in studying NE Asian Political Economics and/or Security Studies. Are there any good programs like this in Japan/Korea/China? PM me if you'd like I won't clog up this thread. I wouldn't mind meeting up just to listen to what you guys are studying. I don't really know anything about what it would entail just yet. |
