Any good recommendations? I'm looking for an easy to low-intermediate level book.
Thanks! |

I recommend Longman's "Intelligent Business." There are 4 versions, elementary through upper-intermediate. What is excellent about this book is that it has real business articles taken from the Economist with vocabulary adjusted for the language level.
A strong or weak point depending upon your point of view is that these books are British English. |

Market Leader and Business Explorer are both in ELP's library, they both look decent (prefer Market Leader), and are often recommended. |

'Get Ready for Business' is what I am using at my university. I like it, pretty easy, so have to supplement often (which I like) and has some good activities. |

Hey Zappa,
Maybe you can help. I have built a business curriculum and am looking for a book to supplement the curriculum, not vice versa. If I post up the tentative semester outline, do you think you'd be able to tell me if your book would match it?
Me. |

Market Leader is the best Business Text that I have ever taught. It is also the text most widely taught around the world.
Students do usually need to have at least a Pre-Intermediate level to study Business English though, as there is generally much less grammar taught within the textbooks. |

Okay,
What I am looking for is a book that deals with resumes, cover letters, business letters, and interviews in English. The books I have mentioned cover other material such as etiquette, cultural differences in greetings, etc.
So, any suggestions? |

Ah, 'Get Ready for Business' (great title by the way, I made a sound file 'Let's Get Ready for Business' in the voice of the old boxing announcer that I play before every class) deals more with greetings and phone English, same as the other books.
I have also taught them resume and interview skills, but I designed all that on my own. |

Um....your ideas are good, but if it's a low-level class, you'll have a difficult time with the resume writing part. Well, the students will anyway. Mine have a hard time writing 100 words, let alone correctly! Uni freshmen by the way.
I used Business Ventures http://www.oup.com/elt/catalogue/isbn/5225?cc=global with some success. There are lots of activities and practice in there. Not sure about the resume writing etc. |

Business Ventures is good, the topics are pretty much the same in all the books. I have copies of ML, BV, and Get Ready, so I have to a lot to draw from. |

Market Leader is a HORRIBLE book (before you jump down my throat, I have a BBA and an MBA, plus I do consultancy work and teach business, not biz English) when someone showed it to me.
R, try Vicki Hollett's Business Opportunities with OUP, that book will serve your purpose.
p.s. I am (I think) the new facilitator of the Biz Eng. SIG Facilitator at you-know-where. |

I don't think Market Leader is that bad. It might not be a good business book, but that doesn't mean it's not good for business English. |

What specifically is horrible about it? Teaching business and teaching Business English are two completely different things. |
