|

My contract with my public school will finish in February and I'm shopping for plane tickets back home. The one-way fare is 1.2 million won on Korean Air. However, I can book a ticket with a 5 day layover in Hawaii for about 670,000 won. I asked my co-teacher and she says it won't be possible because "a lot of teachers commit crimes when they return to their home country. If you commit a crime while in Hawaii, the Korean government is responsible for you." WTF?!
I'm going to call GEPIK later this afternoon and ask about this, but have any of you ever had a layover on your return flight (and your public school still paid for the ticket)? |

LOL
Yes, many Korean teachers go overseas and commit sex related crimes. |

| Hahaha! I actually laughed out loud when I read that, where do some of these people get their ideas? |

I got rather angry and asked her where she heard that. Besides, if I was in Hawaii, which is part of America, why the hell would the Korean government be responsible for me? If that were the case, and I did commit a crime, I suppose I could just say I was drunk and get off with a light sentence. |

| That is one of the most absurd things...well, actually, no it isn't. Par for the course here, I guess. She's just BSing to cover up the real reason she doesn't want you to do that, I'm sure. |

The Korean government is no longer responsible for you once you get your passport stamped at Incheon on your way out.
Good luck on your crime spree! |

I hope you're a U.S. citizen... then you can tell your co-teacher the Korean government will be responsible for you forever! |

Just got off the phone with GEPIK and was told that any layover in any city more than 1 day is not allowed. We are required to catch a connecting flight within a few hours |

You could always 'miss' your connection. You'd have to pay for a 1-way from Hawaii to your hometown but it probably wouldn't be more than a few hundred dollars. |

Heh I didn't even think about that. I suppose they could ship most of their stuff home before leaving. I'm planning to do that when I leave so I can travel on the way back. |

| They'll off-load your luggage if you don't board the plane. |
