I was just reading The "50's" by the guy who got the pulitzer prize for the "Best and the Brightest", and it seems as though the DMZ on such and such a parallell was drawn up by two diplomats using a highschool atlas as a way to stop the Russians from advancing into south Korea. The Russians could just as easilyhave ignored the the suggestion or ultimatum, because their was no way anyone could have stopped them. All allied forces were occupied elsewhere.

The choice of what ever parallell it was and the suggestions to the Russians was a gamble that payed off. Just like that. So it was at the drop of a pin that the whole of Korea didn't get ruled by Kim Il sung.

the russians were called into play to help with the subjugation of japan. They readily aquiesced of course hoping to get more territory, but then the A bomb was dropped. They weren't needed after that

The 38th parallel was re-established at the end of WW2 by the US State Department, and a US General. Rusk and Bonesteel respectively. At the time, Americans were weary of the Russians. Look how quickly America pointed their guns at Russia as soon as they stopped shooting Nazi's.

If Russia had violated the 38th Parallel and invaded the entire Korean Penninsula, the US would have retaliated. US and Russia were allies in WW2, but that didn't mean they liked each other. I don't think Stalin wanted to see firsthand what the A-Bomb could do to Russian cities.

Had the US not used the A-Bomb against Japan, I think Russia would have done as they pleased. However, seeing the US use the bomb on the Japanese not once but TWIVE, I think Stalin realized that they'd better take what they can get and leave it at that.
