My vote is Kid A by Radiohead. Reason being that is introduced electronic to mainstream rock. Bands had done it before but not with much credibility and effectiveness, again in regards to popular rock music.

I know there are many Radiohead haters on this board, please give other bands rather than just state you dislike my suggestion.

Coldplay <Viva la Vida>

Coldplay is too popular to make its fans feel cool and special.

But I love its music.

Say they stole others music or whatever...

I could agree with Coldplay as a candidate but not Viva la Vida maybe Parachutes or A Rush of Blood to the Head. Both are great.

It's been a poor decade for music in my opinion, but in the UK, I think The Strokes' debut album was important. It inspired a lot of new bands, including Arctic Monkeys who then produced their own important album a few years later.

Maybe they will have a greatest hit album later.

This has been the best decade for music. The internet has given us the most access to music that has ever been available. The Strokes have been direct product of that. More music = better music.

I don't think The Strokes had anything to do with the internet. Arctic Monkeys were of course, so I see your point.

OP, good call with Kid A. It's a mind-blowingly brilliant album (and far superior to O.K. Computer)

As for the question, I can't decide from one of the following:

Radiohead - Kid A.
At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command.
Idlewild - 100 Broken Windows.
Converge - Jane Doe.
TVOTR - Return to Cookie Mountain.
OutKast - Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.
Jurassic 5 - Quality Control.
DJ Shadow - The Private Press.
Q and Not U - No Kill No Beep Beep.
Tool - Lateralus.
The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium.
Avalanches - Since I Left You.
The Roots - Phrenology.
The Streets - Original Pirate Material.
Deftones - White Pony.
Mastodon - Leviathan.
Sunn O)))) - Flight of the Behemoth.
The Postal Service - Give Up.

Please post the rationale behind your picks so people understand why they are even here. I fail to see any rhyme or reason behind a lot of these picks.

For example, how was Lateralus important at all? It was just more Tool (which is great... but...). Also, the single off the album got so horribly annoying that whenever I hear it, I shut off whatever source is playing it.

I think a lot of these are just albums you really liked as opposed to albums that provided some sort of significance for the decade.

In Rainbows, for example, might not be everyone's favorite Radiohead album, but it was important in that Radiohead took a stand against the music industry's backwards business model with it's independent, pay-whatever-you-want release. NIN did something similar, but it wasn't as big in scale as Radiohead's thing.

The OP did a fairly good job explaining why his pick is his pick.

My personal choice would be Sasha's 2004 Grammy-nominated Involver. It basically turned electronic music production standards on their head and revolutionized how a lot of people view the genre. It's an electronic album, but it's not a dance album by ANY means. Check it out.

Amy Winehouse for all the controversy it caused. How it won a Grammy I'll never know.

Lady Gaga

Norah Jones' 2002 Come Away With Me proved that jazz is still alive in the mainstream culture as long as you make it more like pop ballads with a pretty lady singing other people's songs like some cover tunes lounge singer everyone can enjoy a drink over. Bah.

True that. A good contender.
