Hey!
So I got a railpass for this weekend since I have to go to Gwangju (from Seoul) for a conference on Friday. This allow me to travel as much as I want with the train (including KTW) for 3 days to a cost 60 000 won... Any recommendations where to go? I have already been to Busan and Seoraksan which I really liked. I wonder what more there are to see in Korea? |

Sorry to not be helpful...but how/where did you get that pass? I've never needed such a thing...but the idea sounds rather intriguing. |

Thanks I was really thinking of something like that! Jeju island seem a bit too far away and the boat schedule doesnt seem to be synchronized with the train times.
As for the rail pass, its indeed very handy (specially when your company pays). If Im in a hurry somewhere I dont have to wait for the ticket queue etc. Here is the link.
Its only valid for people with VISA valid less than 6 months. You should however fill in the the form at least 5 days before you arrive to Korea, even if I managed to get one anyway (with some tricks and a smile)

Trains (other than KTX) in Korea are so bloody CHEAP that I'd never fathom getting a railpass. Cheaper than the bus even. |

Hey!
I read that you can only visit some of the parts of the Hongdo island. Could you maybe give me some more information on this? I would really like to climb the mountain so taht you get some view, would it be possible? Also how is it with the boat tours, any idea what time they leave and from where?
Best Regards!

They (Hongdo boats), leave from Mokpo Harbour. I've only done the Jeju Island boat, which was a little over 3 hours & left around 2pm. Theres also an earlier morning boat at around 8 or 8:30am. Enroute, the Jejudo boat stopped at JinDo & Chujado. At Mokpo Harbour, there were brochures on several boats doing daytrips to Hongdo. The hole in the rock at sunset looks great. Here's a daytime shot:

There are many other islands in the same archipelago that includes Hongdo. I'm sure at least one of them has a small town with a minbak or motel. I'll be checking out Hongdo before I leave Korea. And googling more weblinks like this:

I went to Hongdo in July of 2003. Indeed, only part of the island is accessible due to hilly rocky terrain. There are a couple of ports on the island. Restaurants crammed into the small areas, very festive given the crowds and alcohol flowing (no one driving ). Seafood was good. The best part was encircling the island, going through cave-like openings, getting real close to the cliffs.
It takes about 3 hours each way by ferry from Mokpo Harbour with one or two short stops.
Go with a couple of friends when the weather is nice and it's a nice day spent. |
