I think it would be useful to have a teaching certificate but I want to start working on one while I'm overseas. I know that to get my teaching certificate in the US I will have to do a semester of student teaching. What I am looking for is a school that will allow me to take the education courses I need online, then move to that state for the student teaching portion. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I think my cheap state school might allow you to do a lot of the classes on line, plus they then allow you to student teach almost everywhere. They also have a program allowing you to student teach in Australia, NZ, Ireland, Canada, and the U.K.
Bemidji State University. Northern Minnesota. No out state tuition either.

I got my teaching certificate online through the University of Texas. You can do all the required course work online, but there are some things that have to be done on location. When you take your state certification test, it has to be done at specific testing locations. You will also most likely be required to attend a certain number of hours in teacher training. While you are taking the courses you will be put on a probationary certificate, and after you finish a year teaching at a public school in the states, they will issue you your teaching certificate. Make sure the school you go through provides assistance in securing your first teaching position. Several schools don't like hiring alternative certified teachers. Once you get your first job and teach for a year, your teachers certification will be just like everybody else. Good Luck

This is an Educator Preparation Institute at a junior college. It is available online with the exception of two classes that you may complete when you return.

Most schools offer this online. The University of Phoenix is one of them, its expensive, but you can have your masters + teaching certificate in 1.5 years.

What's the name of this program? I looked through their site but couldn't find it.

The TEFL International course that many of you recommend (the "beach in Thailand") is coming to South Korea after Xmas.

The course is part-time, either a few evenings a week, or weekend afternoons, and leads to full internationally-acceptable TESOL Certification which includes the very popular and succcessful TEFL International Methodology that works wonders in Asian cultures. It's going to be held in Seoul near Seoul Station.

There are a few other bonuses for this particular course: it's run by one of the most qualified and experienced trainers in their company; the certs are signed by Dr. David Nunan; part of the course can be done on-line if you like; there is a high degree of specific course content on teaching in Korean classrooms; and a sizeable "holiday course discount" if you sign up before Jan. 1st, 2010. Check out the link here: http://www.teflkorea.org

You can PM me for more details, or call them at 02-6399-6507

That must be nice, because Florida lets you take the certification test and the education classes, but the only way you even get a temp license is if you are hired by a school first. Sad

This has nothing to do with the OP. But hey, you're a spammer and reading probably isn't part of that job description, is it?

Same thing in Tennessee as far as I can tell. Except you can't enroll in the certification courses unless you already have a job offer. I've yet to figure out how you get a job offer without being certified, and the school board has ignored the half dozen emails I've sent them asking. Good stuff, TN. Rolling Eyes

Sorry runtheguantlet. Not really a spammer. Just wanted to let people thta are interested in getting certified in Korea, that there is a new course available. But you're right...I didn't really read the topic very well... My apologies. I'm not a good reader, that's all. Hate to be classed as a spammer...but I deserve it now that I've read the posts a little closer. Hav ebeen in teacher training for awhile in Europe and Asia though, and can offer unbiased advice next time.

Just to let you know, I personally didn't find the program helpful. They were very unorganized and offered very little student support. I did get my certification, but gained little knowledge through their courses. I think I paid around $5,000 for the courses. I should have just done my student teaching when I got my BA Ed instead of thinking I would be slick and get a school to hire me on emergency certification. A mistake I deeply regret.
