Given the state of our planet, do you think it wise to censor civil discourse? If so, why?

(Assuming that this question isn't being asked as part of someone's personal agenda...)

I believe that the only type of speech that should be illegal is direct incitement to criminal activity. Bascially, you explicitly suggest criminal activity to someone who you know is likely to carry it out. I'm not talking about "Joe wrote on his blog that abortion is murder, and then someone out in cyberland read that and decided to blow up a clinic". Basically, I'm thinking of situations where the speech in question is the direct and indispensable cause of the illegal behaviour.

If the discourse is civil, why censor it?

The Cronulla riots in Sydney are a classic example of that. Shock Jocks (eg radio personality Alan Jones) were inciting Australian youths fuelled by alchohol, to attack Lebanese immigrants taunting them.

Say whatever you want as long as it doesn't cause undue monetary damage to individual; owners of property should be allowed to kick out opinions as they see fit, such as this message board.

What do you mean by the state of our planet? And what do you mean by civil discourse?

My first response to your question is that censorship (not only of mere information) is one of the main purposes of government, and that the wisdom of any censorship must vary with the wisdom of said government.
