|
|
So I'm thinking about visiting a friend in Shanghai from December 30th to January 3rd. I'm American. I hear the visa process might be kind of complicated/expensive. Can anyone tell me exactly how it goes? Is it true I have to get it a month in advance?? So... I won't be allowed in if I just fly into Shanghai and approach customs with my valid passport- I mean they don't grant you a visa at their airport??
Blah. Seems kind of complicated. On a layover I looked into going to Shanghai for the day, and I could have sworn the lady told me it was like $50,000 and I could get it there at the airport... maybe that was just for a day visa or something... |

| its in the neighborhood of about $50. Its one one the reasons why I won't be visiting china. Indonesia is $25 and you can get it on arrival. Thailand is free. Malaysia is free. Singapore is free. Is china really that great? |

China is about $40 or $50 for all countries EXCEPT America. America is more like $130. I got a Chinese Visa in Bangkok before. They actually have a big sign in there calling out Americans as needing to pay this extra penalty.
China is big and nice to see, and the people are really friendly to Americans. But the Embassy consulate section seems to have a different view of Americans, and there is something to be said about not going where you are not wanted. |

| Yes China really is that great. The only reason that the visa fee is higher for Americans is that the US charges a high fee for the Chinese to get visas to go to the US. |

| Yes, China is definitely worth it. Getting a visa is not complicated and it only takes a couple business days. Simply give your passport to any travel agent, pay the fee they will do all the work, and you pick up your visa a couple days later. If you aren't American the fee isn't that bad - Americans only pay more because we are complete douchefu-ks when it comes to letting tourists visit the US. If you are American it makes sense to wait till you can take a longer trip to China to make the visa cost more worth it. |

Thanks guys... yeesh, $150 is pretty steep to be there spending money for a week. Guess it'll be pretty damn cold around New Years as well.
Anyone have any suggestions for Shanghai? And what's the cheapest airline to get there from Seoul (Incheon)?? |

I lived there for almost a year. If you'll elaborate upon the kinds of things you're interested in, I'd be happy to offer up some recommendations. |
