Iraqi former battle zone sees abnormal clusters of infant tumours and deformities

Martin Chulov in Falluja guardian.co.uk, Friday 13 November 2009 19.24 GMT Article history

Doctors in Iraq's war-ravaged enclave of Falluja are dealing with up to 15 times as many chronic deformities in infants and a spike in early life cancers that may be linked to toxic materials left over from the fighting.

The extraordinary rise in birth defects has crystallised over recent months as specialists working in Falluja's over-stretched health system have started compiling detailed clinical records of all babies born.

Neurologists and obstetricians in the city interviewed by the Guardian say the rise in birth defects which include a baby born with two heads, babies with multiple tumours, and others with nervous system problems - are unprecedented and at present unexplainable.

A group of Iraqi and British officials, including the former Iraqi minister for women's affairs, Dr Nawal Majeed a-Sammarai, and the British doctors David Halpin and Chris Burns-Cox, have petitioned the UN general assembly to ask that an independent committee fully investigate the defects and help clean up toxic materials left over decades of war including the six years since Saddam Hussein was ousted.

The American soldiers involved in that conflict suffered all kinds of illnesses later on which were linked to genetic damage. They had been exposed to radiation.

Clearly the Falluja area is not fit to live in.

Why not fence it off, make it a no-go zone? Relocate all its people elsewhere.

This is how America, under the direction of the Israel lobby, liberates people.

So a secret cabal of Jews in Tel Aviv gave the final order to use depleted uranium -tipped missiles on Iraqis? Wow I didn't know that.

The neo-conservatives pushed the war. Reggie blames them for that.
He ignores the fact that many neo-conservatives are not Jewish, though disproportionately are Jewish. Thus, there was a convergence over what some thought to be Israel's interests and that the US in terms of attacking Iraq. This analysis oversimplifies things and ignores what the gentile politicians wanted as well. On a side note, most American Jews oppose those neo-con types and showed that in polls. However, they are not flexing their muscle enough against them, but they are starting to do so.
It's not a secret that some pro-Israeli hawks wanted America to attack Iraq. However, plenty in the GOP who had wanted to use American power that way and had no connection to Israel also agreed.

These said neo-cons wanted America to attack Iran and Syria next.
The other neo-cons were not so keen on attacking Syria.

It's a rather complicated picture, but the invasion of Iraq has something to do with pro-Israeli interests. I don't think I would view them as pro-Israeli forces because Israeli people didn't necessarily sign up for reckless nationalist politics anymore than Americans, but they are manipulated by politicians maybe even worse than we are. Some said liberating Iraq was partially for the sake of security for Israel. Israel is viewed as an ally and people protect their allies. Israel's security will come through a viable peace, not nationalist adventures or trying to encourage the US to fight wars that benefit it and maybe benefit
the US.

The other view is that Egypt and Israel should be cut off, stop receiving funds, and when they want weapons they should pay for the weapons with their own money and not have American tax payers pay for them.

Our policies in the East are a big mess. Perhaps, the people of Falluja should relocate, but people feel attached to their old cities.
