|
|
So I got my potential winter camp schedule (at least two weeks of it - the other week is still up in the air).
Factoring in the other week, the max number of days I will be able to take during winter vacation is 12 business days before the new term starts. Those may or may not be continuous days off, but that's another fish to fry so I'll save that for later. Apparently I'll find out about my 2nd, 1 week camp next week hopefully.
My question is, how the hell am I supposed to use up the 21 days vacation in the contract? I thought winter was supposed to be the "long" vacation. Isn't summer even shorter? If I can barely milk 12 days out of this vacation, can they possibly give me 9?
And where does the 2 week home leave for renewal fit into the scheme of things? |

Didn't you have any time off in the summer? |

i started this contract in summer.
i'm curious how i will be able to get up to 21 days vacation AND take my 2 week renewal during the summer break. There just isn't any time with these 3 week camps in every vacation. |

you should also get 2 weeks for spring vacation, in February. Not sure how this works in SMOE but in my gepik school we get the last 2 weeks of Feb. off and no camps are ever scheduled during that time. |

Most likely you're going to get jiffed from taking your maximum vacation. |

My new term apparently starts early February. Somehow I doubt I'll be getting a 2 week vacation in there.
So, why did I accept this job with more vacation as one of the perks if I don't even get that vacation? |

Get your VP to call SMOE and have them decide when they'd like you to take your vacation. They must give you the days you are entitled to. I'd suggest giving them two or three options on paper (such as all contiguous in January, or split between January/February). If you have to miss classes or camp, so be it; you're entitled to the days.
UPDATE: Oh, and if they don't give you a solid answer just say that you will be booking your flights by #date and have them let you know which option they'd like. Once the flights are booked then you're free!

It's not even like they are trying to screw me out of vacation. It's just the numbers. If I teach the SMOE wide mandated 3 week camp (what were they thinking?), the max business days I can use for vacation is 12 without eating into school days. I don't see how I can get the other 9 plus 2 weeks at the end of my contract in the summer if I am to renew. |

if that's the case, then I'm sure it's an issue for all smoe teachers. Ask and check around and see how tothers are handling the situation (this thread should work). No matter how many camps they mandate, I'm pretty sure you cannot get screwed out of your contract mandated vacation time. How the school handles it is up to them.
I remember similar threads about this a while back when smoe started mandating the three week camps each break. I know there were other teachers with similar issues/questions. |

Tell them which days you are taking off and have them work the camp around you. |

The new term starts in Feb but you are only back at school for 2 weeks then Feb 11th or 12th untill the 28th is off again, this is called Spring Vacation. This is good cause Feb is pretty much written off as far as work goes but from an educators point of view it is all really a waste of time, come back to school for 2 weeks and do nothing. |

Are the "mandated" camps in your contract? If they aren't, you are more than entitled to take my advice. The contract comes first. Stupid rules they make up as they go along mean nothing. |

Another poster had the idea of sending a letter to their BOE telling them when you intend to take your vacation.
Come vacation time bring it out.
Camps don't mean a darn thing anyways. |
