My friend who lives in the U.S. was asked by a recruiter to fly to Guam for a visa interview. She is needed ASAP for an ESL position in Seoul. Is the visa process faster from Guam or something?
Is this normal practice these days? |

there's a sticky on the faq section here at dave's about visa runs to guam. there's a korean consulate there and many have done visa runs there. i met a guy doing it when i visited the american territory
completely normal. it's the closest and cheapest and fastest american soil to do an interview if one is american and needs to return to home country for interview (as per relatively recent laws for those who have broken korean laws before, like a previous visa overstay)
don't worry. enjoy! get to the beach for a couple of hours. you won't regret it. |

VanIslander- but she is living in the U.S. right now. There's a closer Korean consulate to her then in Guam.
The only thing I can think of is that visas are processed faster in Guam? Anyone know? |

I've done a number of visa runs to Guam.
Guam's a really cool place to go for a vacation. It's a nice tropical island with great beaches. Tourism is Guam's major economy. Second is the US military.
If the employer is paying for the Guam trip, it's a great opportunity to visit Guam.
Not too many US mainlanders know much about Guam other than it's very far away from the US mainald and has military bases.
So there is a saying that goes: "Guam is America's best kept secret."
Due to Guam's location of being just west of the International Dateline, Guam is the first place in the United States to enter each new day.
So the slogan of Guam is: "Where America's day begins."

Yes, a Visa run for US citizens is possible in Guam. The main reason why Guam is used is if a teacher arrives in Korea before getting their Visa. Then they go to Guam to get their Visa as it only takes 1 day to complete. There are even cases where a teacher will fly to Guam get their Visa and come to Korea. The main reason being it is much faster. Most consulates in the US take at least a week to schedule the interview and then 2-3 days to return the passport. If the passport is mailed back that's an additional 2-3 days. So it's saving up to 2 weeks by going to Guam.
This is perfectly legal and your friend can enjoy a day in Guam expenses paid. I wouldn't mind a bit of warm weather myself. |
