So I've been at this private kindergarden for just over five months, and I've been doing nothing but butting heads with the director who hates my guts. I got a written warning saying my classes weren't fun enough, and I let the director have a piece of my mind. After negotiations, they are saying that they will give me one month to see if I can bring my performance up to their standards ( ), and if not that they will transfer me to another school.
Can they really transfer me, pension and all to another school? Or are they just yanking my chain and waiting to fire me until they get a new teacher? Any information will be appreciated. Thanks. |

Assuming you're on an E-2, they can't transfer you... and it's likely you will be fired. |

I take it there's some sort of law preventing this? I consider them a sneaky bunch of liars, but it sounded like they really were telling the truth that time, but I don't know anything about transferring visas. Well, crud. I guess I will just wait and see what my recruiter says. |

I think you should learn about Korean Immigration law... whether you want to or not.  |

OK, after looking for information on the E-2 Visa it seems that it is unlikely, but sometimes possible, for an employer to transfer an E-2 visa to another employer. I guess the immigration office needs to be in a good mood or be buddies with that particular school? So, I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.
Assuming worst comes to worst, and I get fired, what would be the best course of action? And should I be doing anything now to cover my behind? I don't want to come back to Korea to teach. Ever. (I only want to transfer now so I can retain my pension, if at all possible.) So I obviously don't care about reapplying someday for another E-2 visa with another school. Do I then need (or want) a letter of release? Does not getting a letter of release simply make it extremely difficult to get hired at another school in Korea, or are there other repercussions? Thanks. |

I have the same problem, and I've only been here 6 weeks. I am clashing with management because I'm "too fun", "Not enough scolding", and "are too relaxed looking". I am not going to make my adorable KINDERGARTEN kids cry because they don't sit straight all of the time and don't speak fluent, perfect English. I make them have fun and laugh. Always the children who suffer from the adults and their mental problems. ALWAYS THE KIDS. |

If you don't plan on ever coming back to Korea, you don't really have anything to worry about. You don't need a letter of release. Its only useful if you want to transfer your visa. You can just leave whenever you want. Your pension is yours and your employer can't take it back, assuming he has been paying into it and not pocketing it. When you leave, whether you've worked for two months or a year, all you have to do is go down to the pension office with a ticket leaving Korea and apply for a lump sum settlement of your pension, assuming you're from a country that has a pension agreement with Korea. |

You work for a business. What exactly did you expect, besides most people would love to have your director newb |

I finally talked to my recruiter, and she swears that the school doesn't want to fire me. She also said she could find me another school no problem if worst came to worst. So, I suppose I don't need to wonder whether I'll be coming back to the States sooner than planned. But I still don't trust my current employer half as far as I can spit. My recruiter kept telling me that the school wants me to be "perkier," and she gave me an enthralling rah-rah speech about how I can make it a challenge to be the best teacher the school has ever had. Yeah... I'll get right on that. I'm being as @$#%ing perky as I can be already. I think I'd rather get fired than try to be the perkiest teacher in South Korea.  |
