SEOUL, South Korea A fire tore though an indoor shooting range in southern South Korea, killing 10 people, including at least two Japanese SEOUL, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- A total of 10 people, including eight Japanese tourists, were killed, and six others were injured Saturday afternoon in a fire at an indoor shooting range in Busan, a southern port city of South Korea, local media quoted police as saying.
The fire broke out at about 02:26 p.m. local time at the second-floor indoor shooting range which was located in a five-story building in the second largest city of South Korea, and was quelled at around 03:04 p.m., police said.
Preliminary investigation showed that the fire started in a lounge adjacent to the shooting range, where seven bodies have been found later, and eight bodies believed to be Japanese tourists who were visiting the shooting range as part of the tour program, with the two others South Koreans, the police said.
"The victims apparently died in short term as they were trapped inside the airproof shooting range," the police added. Most of the victims were believed to have died from severe burns, the police said, adding that the death toll is feared to rise, because many of the injured are in critical condition.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, according to the police. Eyewitnesses told local media that they saw black smoke coming out of the building after a loud bang.

One thing that really bugged me: in an interview with some of the firemen, it was stated that the exit was only 10 meters away from where 7 of the bodies were found. The firemen went on to say that they didn't understand why they had died, since the building layout was so simple and the exit was right there. Maybe things were lost in translation, but the way it was phrased was a little stinging, like these people were stupid and that's why they died. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it definitely had a "well it sure isn't our fault because our building was fine. Must've been their problem" smell on it. |

Smoke killed Busan fire victims, autopsy reports |
I guess they couldn't see the exit, because of the smoke?
I also read another report in the Joongang Daily, that there were 16,000 live bullets very close to the fire, & it would have been catastrophic, if they'd exploded. Korea Sparkling!

The fire was at a shooting range....a place where live bullets tend to be stored. |

Yeah, that's what I would have thought, too. So many times when there is a situation like this, people die because the smoke is too thick. At that Rhode Island club fire, weren't some of the dead found a mere few feet from the exit? I don't know why the thought didn't cross through a ~fireman's~ head, though. |

Missed this bit in the link, eh T.U.M.?

It is common sense that fire prevention measures should be given top priority when building a facility that deals with explosive firearms... It is also incomprehensible that the shooting range was authorized to conduct business within a bustling, crowded marketplace, which can hinder actions to respond quickly and efficiently to fires. |
