I know this is probably specific to the airlines....but I've never been on this long of a flight and been staying a whole year.

Would it be beneficial to buy a 6 piece luggage set?

Thanks! -- See you in two weeks!

Check your airline's website, they are all different. Usually the limit is two suitcases. You can bring more, but you have to pay. I would think two big suitcases is enough as most things you can get here (do a search for other threads for suggestions on what to bring). Also keep in mind you'll have to carry or get a luggage cart to get your luggage through the airport and get it to your home, which can be difficult if you have a lot of luggage.

Also check weight limits - some airlines will make you take stuff out even if you're a pound/kilo over. Some airlines weight carry-ons while others don't.

From what I've gathered reading similar threads to these, most people bring two suitcases that they check into the airplane's cargo hold: typically one large rolling suitcase and one large duffel bag, or two large rollers and then, varying by person, they bring a backpack and a satchel/carrying case with a laptop and other electronics on the plane with them.

Most airlines' limit is 50 pounds or 75 pounds for checking your bags, so if yours is heavier then those, expect to pay a fee anywhere from $25 to $100. Weighing your bags before you go to the airport is always a good idea. Travel stores and online shops sell these things that hook onto your suicase, and you lift them up, and it was your luggage. They're usually around $12.

It's smart to keep your electronics and expensive gear with you at all times, that way if something happens to your luggage en route, it won't be as huge of a deal. Anybody can replace clothes, and clothes are cheap compared to computers, handheld devices, etc...

Also you need to consider where you will be living. Odds are you will have a one room apartment with very limited storage. If you want to have 6 big suitcases that will just sit in a corner for 11 months and 29 days, then get the set. If you would like to have more room I would suggest getting large duffel bags. I brought one huge duffel and a somewhat large backpack plus a carry-on. I can stuff the bags under my bed with no problems.

Of course it depends on where you are coming from too. I assume since you are talking about a 6 piece luggae set you must be from Nth America. If you are coming from Oceania and, I think, Europe you can check 25kg.

True. I flew with Air China. Their limit is 20kg checked and 5kg for hand luggage. They were making people take stuff out of their hand luggage - yet they didn't say anything to me about my suitcase being nearly 4kg over 20kg, but they did make a guy pay when he was 7kg over the limit.
