|
|
I am currently in Shanghai, China teaching and I'm planning to make my move over to Korea soon. I am a true city guy, but I definitely can appreciate the outdoors and the less crowded areas of any country. I am looking for a place that is comfortable, at least some variety in things to do, and has universities where I can consider looking for work. Outside of those few things I would say nothing completely isolated with options to commute or travel to other parts of Korea (Seoul/Busan/etc.) with relative ease.
Thanks! |

Chuncheon - In my opinion, everything you could ever want/need in a city + it's an hour or so from Seoul. Clean air, beautiful mountains, small enough that it's cheap to get anywhere, good people, good food, good bars, great markets, english speaking doctors/dentists... I love it and will miss it.
Jeonju would be my other vote. |

Disabuse me, but I think if I were just going to be here for a year I'd try Sokcho. Wish I had, now I'm stuck in greater Seoul. |

I lived in Jeonju for about 5 years and i really liked it. It was just my size. The only thing I didn't like about it was its location re: getting anywhere else in Korea.
I am in Daejeon now and I love it here too. The location (and two train lines) ae it ideal for traveling around Korea. Seoul is 50 minutes one way and Busan 2 hours the other. You can also get to Mokpo and then on to Jeju from here. |

Gangneung on the east coast. Has a nice beach, close to the pyeongchan ski resort for winter, a medium sized downtown area with some good bars/restaurants/shops ect. Easy to get to Seoul and back and around half a million people so loads of work. A shot bus ride from Sokcho another nice city which has Soraksan one of Koreas most famous mountains....I also recommend the above mentioned Chungchon which is easy to get to from Gangneung. |

Good suggestions.
Daegu as well could be cool. It's on the KTX line, getting you into Seoul in 2 hours or 1 hour to Busan.
From your description, I'd go for Daejeon first. |
