Hey everyone. So I just wrote the GMAT, and I am wondering about my result. I got a 590 which isn't fantastic, but it's a solid respectable score. The problem is that the difference between the quantitative (math) score, and the verbal score is very large. For some reason I kind of bombed the math section scoring below my actual ability most likely due to improper time management. I got a 33 percentile ranking. On the other hand I somehow managed to summon some serious concentration on the verbal section, and I ended up getting an 87 percentile ranking which is great. The 590 is higher than the minumum (ie should be good enough) requirement for the schools that I would be applying to, however I am concerned over the large difference between the two sections. Can anyone with some knowledge or experience with this kind of thing let me know how important that is, and whether I should think about writing the test again, or I am fine as long as my overall score is good enough? |

I used to teach the GMAT, and the good/bad news is that every school seems to use the score differently. I think most schools just look at your overall score and don't really give the different sections much interest, but that some schools do have a minimum for one or both sections, so it really does vary on a school-by-school basis. Sorry that's the clearest answer you'll probably get.
If you really think you can do better, though, it wouldn't hurt to take it again, especially if you are pretty sure that you can do much better on the math section than you did. 590 is not bad, but there's some room there for significant improvement if you're certain you could do better on the math. |

Just a suggestion, but did you know that some schools offer a 2 year undergrad business degree? It's an "after-degree".
It could save you thousands of dollars and you will be learning the same things.
Just something to think about. |
