I'm thinking about taking a position at Soonchunhyang University in Asan, and hoping there might be some former/current instructors who could comment on the working/living conditions there. I'm not concerned about "night life" or "entertainment." I had enough of that in Seoul. My main concerns are the working conditions and housing.

Any comments will be much appreciated. Thank you! Very Happy

The housing is terrible and the housing alliance is inadequate. Also, make sure where you are going to be teaching. Most of their teachers mostly teach in local public schools.

My advice for you, is to do your own homework rather than trust the opinions of posters on here. Believe me, it's obvious why I say this.

They've already told me that I'd be assigned to a local public school. They also sent me a few pics of one of their apartments and I'd swear that there's a cockroach trap beside the drain in the bathroom.

Is the "terrible" aspect of their housing possibly related to cockroaches? Or is it because they don't include air conditioning or microwaves?

Please elaborate, if you have a minute. Thanks.

The presence of a cockroach trap does not indicate the presence of cockroaches. They are a good precaution.

Yes, there are cockroaches in some apartments. There is also mold in some apartments. They are not cleaned between residents. The bathrooms are poor quality. The walls are thin, and the buildings are student dorms, so they are noisy. They do not provide air conditioning or a TV.

The couple apartments are much better, and are in a better building.

I got my own apartment, but the housing allowance is very small. I did really like where I lived.

Based on the post before mine here, you might need just that - a housing alliance! Then, maybe you could kick someone off the island... Very Happy

What do you mean by "do your homework"? Where else would I get accurate information about a school? I usually request faculty contacts, but they're usually bias.

Does any know whether the working conditions at Soonchunhyang University are like?
