Don' t do it, you will be far too isolated, even weekends away will require weeks of preperation |

I used to live on Jeju and it's a great place if you are someone who doesn't mind being away from the city and not having immediate access to the mainland. I know a lot of people who have stayed there long term and really enjoy it. There are plenty of things to do in the warmer months if you are an outdoor kind of person - parks, beaches, horseback riding, snorkeling, and hang gliding just to name some. You will definitely have to be more creative in the winter months when it's too cold to do much of anything outside. I got island fever in the winter and had to take several trips to the mainland. Those trips can add up if you are not careful. Living on the island can be isolating, so just be sure that is something you are ready for. There are some Western restaurants and goods available on the island but not nearly the selection that is available in bigger cities. Your best bet for finding Western goods or clothes is to travel to Seoul or to order online, which can be pricey when you consider shipping.Travel off the mainland doesn't necessarily take weeks of preparation. I took several weekend trips and just booked my plane ticket a few days in advance. If you are planning to leave over any major holidays, I would definitely plan weeks in advance to make sure a plane ticket is available. You should be able to meet people if you make an effort and you might try joining the yahoo group for the island. If you want specific information about life on the island, you should be able to post your question there and get answers from people who still live there. |

As pangaea has mentioned in the post before this, excluding major holidays, it's pretty easy to travel off of Jeju by booking your tickets a few days in advance. Heck, often you can even just walk in to the airport and book a ticket for the next flight out. If you want the cheapest tickets (less than $20) you'd have to book online with Eastar Jet a few weeks in advance, though.
Numerous flights go to Seoul, also Busan, and you can also get flights to other places, like Wonju, Suncheon, Gwangju, Daegu, Daejeon, Ulsan and Jinju on less regular occasions.
There are also ferries as well, to Mokpo (3.5 hours), Nokdong (4 hours), Busan (9-11 hours) and a few other places. Pretty easy to take a car on these, but not necessarily cheap enough to warrant a weekend trip.
If you are the type of person who likes to hop in a car or bus every weekend and see how far you can get before you have to return on Sunday, well, island living might not be for you. However, there are a lot of neat places to explore on Jeju, so I think it would still be a good place for a year. If you like hiking, biking, and the outdoors, Jeju is great.
There are a few posts about what life is like on Jeju, I think if you search for them using the fantastically awful search function on this site and make a small sacrifice to the God of Broken Search Engines, they should come up and make for good reading.
There is one recruiter that is based on Jeju that I know of, you can look for Jeju ESL, run by a guy called Jason Smith. I have not worked with him, so this isn't a personal recommendation, but he might be someone you'd want to check out.
You could also try the EPIK program and request a Jeju placement. http://www.epik.go.kr/
Or contact the Jeju POE directly and see how that works out. http://www.jje.go.kr/english/
Oh, and check out rhymeswithjeju, the Jeju Yahoo! group
and the Jeju Life Forums http://jejulife.net/forums
Good luck. |
