I usually try to answer these kinds of questions by calling up EPIK myself, but that sometimes leads to more confusion than asking here, so I'll ask here first.

My last year's contract said I should receive 2 million Won "on completion of the contract"
I never got that money.
This year's contract says I should also receive 2 million Won for "completing his/her duties".

1) Is there a difference between "on completion of the contract" and "completing one's duties"?

2) Should this money be paid when you eventually leave the school? or should it be paid at the end of each contract?

3) Should this issue be taken up with EPIK or the Busan Office of Education?

When I finish this contract, I should be owed 4 million as severance pay for the completion of two contracts, both at the same school.

Hi There,

With a public school it is not likely to be an issue. It is up to the school. You can request the money for the previous years which is a good idea. If you don't request it though they can pay it as they decide. My school decided to pay it one day.

If you have requested it and they are not forthcoming it is possible to take it up with the board.

Thanks Michelle, I'll ask my school to cough it up at the end of the year.

Thanks eyeball for the links, I really should use the search function.

Actually, no. What you are owed is the average of your last three months of your contract (times 2), NOT your monthly salary from year one plus your monthly salary from year two.

Right. And if you do extra work during those final three months things can get lucrative. Strange that they do this in Busan, though, as I was under the impression that they paid out yearly.

So, throughout EPIK, the last three months averaged is the amount of your severance pay?

Throughout Korea, by law. And remember it is the total amount of remuneration including overtime, extra classes, editing work, value of any gifts (if you got a car as a bonus, say).

tompatz posted a link to the labor law for me before and it had a great definition of pay.

Does that figure include the total amount you've been paid each month, even if it was in separate deposits? I teach afterschool classes at my school, for which I signed a separate contract (basically just specifying the remuneration and schedule). Since the students pay for the class the money is deposited in my account about 10 days after my normal salary. The school doesn't make any money from this, by the way; all the money is deposited in my account, if that makes a difference.

So, if (using hypothetical numbers for simplicity) I got 2 million from EPIK and 500k from afterschool class, would my severance be based on a 2.5 million salary? Or since it's under a separate contract would it not apply for work of less than a year?

just to be clear, you mean the average of the last three months of the 2nd contract?
