A team of pioneering South Korean scientists have succeeded in producing the polymers used for everyday plastics through bioengineering, rather than through the use of fossil fuel based chemicals. This groundbreaking research, which may now allow for the production of environmentally conscious plastics, is published in two papers in the journal Biotechnology and Bioengineering to mark the journal's 50th anniversary. |

Sounds great. Hopefully this won't turn out to be another example of South Korean scientists lying to make their country look good, as per the stem cell researcher. |

They learned their lesson from what happens if they tarnish nation's image with fake claiming. |

More than likely legit.
There will probably be a catch, though. My guess is it uses astronomical amounts of energy. For instance if it takes one barrel of oil to make a tonne of traditional plastic, it will likely take twenty barrels of equivalent oil energy to produce a tonne of this new stuff.
Expect the calls for govt subsidies to begin in 3,2........ |

And it will take 5-20 years before it's practical and cheap enough to do. |
