What a list!

It doesn't feel like I watch that much TV, but I have seen most of the episodes of most of these shows. The only series' in the top 10 I havnt seen end to end are Lost and The Shield.

The picks are pretty much unimpeachable for me. I would have had Nip/Tuck on there some where, though. A heap of cartoons are missing, so maybe they have their own list?

Which shows are missing for you?

I checked the list just to make sure 'The Wire' was number 1. After that I don't really care. Thought Arrested Development was around the right spot and The Office(UK) was a little too low. I was absolutely hooked on that when it came out. Lost is way too high...a gimmick show. Deadwood should have been top 5. Futurama has no place on any such list..same can be said for 'how I met your mother'. South Park should definitly be on this list.

My top 5 would be

1 The Wire
2 The Office (UK)
3 The Sopranos
4 Deadwood
5 South Park/Arrested Development

AVClub have a hard on for How I Met Your Mother, for some odd reason. They must be doing a cartoon list. The Simpsons is still one of the best shows of the decade, despite its decline. King Of The Hill is good enough, as is Family Guy.

The Wire was always going to win. Omar is one of the great characters in any genre, literature included.

I agree with your to five. Mad Men is up there for me, though.

Bored to death is a big call. It should be awesome, but it has only had a few good moments thus far, and the first season is already over. I haven't finished Breaking Bad yet. Is it done, or is there another season in the works?

I haven't touched Sons Of Anarchy. I'm watching Frasier right now. Might finish Breaking Bad and Bored to Death, then start Sons.

Beautifully written, great character and such... I will only rank my shows with US version. I don't really watch British TV (sorry for missing out on shows like The Office and Peep show)

The Wire - great story about the inner city. The writer gets it. He actually understands the whole ecosystem without missing a beat.

Arrested Development - great writing, great cast.

The Office (US version and tie for 2nd place) - its awkwardly funny. Some cringe worthy moments where you tell yourself "yeah I've always wanted to say that"

Californication - I loved the writing for this show. I think its really funny but some of their supporting cast makes you shake your head

Mad Men
Sex and the City
- okay why is Sex and the City is so high up and next to Mad men? Because both of these shows have great production and costume designer along with a great story. Mad men's costumes have people saying that their wardrobe is very precise as well as Sex and the City's trendy (expensive) design. Even til this day, Sex and the City's wardrobe is still ahead of its time.

30 Rock
Battlestar Galactica

Sopranos- in the middle of the series, it was really boring.
How I Met Your Mother
Big Love
Dexter

Lost - someone says its gimmicky but it still keeps you on the edge of your seat. Great writing but sometimes the acting is just not there.

Left wayyyy too soon to give a proper ranking...
Freaks and Geeks (NBC)
Undeclared (Fox)
John from Cincinnati (HBO) - the director from deadwood
Playmakers (ESPN) - this show was cancelled after 1 season because the NFL didn't like it. They probably threatened ABC or something. NFL=control freaks

Best variety show....
Chapelle show
...
..
Colbert Report

There is more Breaking bad in the pipeline. Are you saying there are only 8 eps. in season 1 of Bored to Death?
I think Californication is getting worse instead of better.

I should have mentioned http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Corner also. Pretty harrowing stuff.

Somebody mentioned Dexter, I think it is alright, but I wish he would just kill his stupid sister already. She is the worst part of the show.

I agree her sister is really annoying.

The writing for Californication is still witty.

TV shows are getting better than Hollywood movies.

Agree with most of lists already posted, but I really loved "The Lost Room" and "The Fringe" as well.

While not exactly 'new', the Law&Order franchise still manages to keep me watching every week. The original is celebrating its 20th year and SVU is in its 11th(?) season. Even though it is formulaic, the characters are strong (especially the bad guys-- Robin Williams episode on SVU was fantastic) and the storylines keep my interest level high.

The Wire has to be number 1.

Dexter? Some of the acting in that show makes me cringe. It's enjoyable to watch, but I don't think it should be on Top 10 lists.

I like the list too. I've got to get around to watching The Shield and the Sopranos. Breaking Bad is coming back next summer I believe. It's been a long wait already. I've been rewatching this lately. It's so good.

Californication with David Duchovny is an awesome show but the latest season is a little less funny in my opinion....still recommended though.
