S.Korea May Force Foreign Teachers to Learn about Nation

A lawmaker is seeking to make it mandatory that foreigners who are hoping to work as English teachers in the nations schools or private institutes become more educated about Koreas culture and the expectations of teachers in Korea.

Representative Cho Jeon-hyuk of the ruling Grand National Party, who is also a member of the parliamentary committee on education, proposed on Thursday revisions to laws on schools and private institutes.

The revised bills seek to make it mandatory for private institutes to have foreign teachers complete educational programs on South Koreas culture and people.

Cho said most foreign teachers in the nation do not have enough of an understanding about Koreas culture and practices. He said the revisions are aimed at raising the quality of the nations English education programs by mandating that foreign teachers have better knowledge of Korea.

I actually think this could be a good thing provided that teachers are not forced to pay for the educational programs and that it will not simply be propaganda.

Laughing Well, certainly, that is true. My thinking was that it would be good for FOB teachers.

I think this is a great idea. Perhaps best pre-korea. Maybe we should all take a korea test for our visas. Very Happy

Although I agree that new teachers should learn Korean practice & etiquette, it makes one wonder the scope of what the gov will have in the "education" ie Dokdo is ours/Sea of Japan/Kimchi Exclamation

Force us to:

1. Like and eat kimchi
2. Hork and spit
3. Understand misunderstanding
4. Lie to save face

Anything else?

We could learn about Uri Nara until the cows come home but it wouldn't make a lick of difference in the classroom. We just come here to help Koreans with their journey into English. Teachers dont need to know about the Joseon dynasty or Shilla to be a great educator.

The point of this thread is not to list ways to bash Korea. Anymore posts about spitting, Dokdo or the such and this thread will be locked.

Stick to the issue at hand or go post somewhere else.

They may be copying the Thais that have had a similar course for a few years now:

I'd greatly prefer some subsidized Korean lessons like YBM has.

Well, I hope that Korea does not copy Thailand 100% in that regard. I heard that teachers there have to pay a few thousand dollars just to finish a culture seminar. It is a real scam. If Korea did the same thing, I doubt that many people would be willing to come and teach English there.

They WILL include a Dokdo spiel. That's obvious.

Sounds like a totally baseless statement made in justification of an idea that could not possibly improve anything. We have plenty of time to learn about Korea's culture and practices living in Korea.

Which facts about Korea would, after learning them, improve the quality of education a student would receive? None that I can see: an effective teacher with a helpful co-teacher could use the same lesson plan for a group of Korean students, a group of Japanese students, and a group of Spanish students, and an ineffective teacher or a teacher with an unhelpful co-teacher isn't going to turn things around because he knows a little trivia about Korea.

What non-propaganda facts could be taught which would make this idea a "good thing", bearing mind anyone can do any research they want before coming to Korea?

Another layer of bureacracy, another irritance that will frustrate and turn away applicants. Rather than require teaching credentials we propagandize newcomers at their own expense? No good can come of this. What will it involve, ten required hours watching Arirang?

Good grief, you get exposed to doing things the Korean way 365.25 days of the year here. Who is thick enough to need more?
