For those who do not want to stay in Korea or be involved with TESOL/Education/Linguistics for the rest of your life, what kind of job do you eventually want to pursue when you leave Korea?

This is not a loaded question by any means, I'm just genuinely curious what people's long-term plans are.

I'm thinking of working in International Student Affairs at a university or some other kind of international educational exchange/study abroad program. Perhaps I could also find work for the federal government or an NGO.

I am starting my PhD in Business now precisely so I can leave Korea and teach elsewhere.

The original plan was to leave by the end of 2010, but I am seeing some very sweet jobs being advertised at the place I want to move to, so I am applying to them and seeing what may happen. I might leave a lot earlier than I thought!

Can't wait!!!

Start a tourism activity style business back home. So as you would expect the current enviroment is not ideal for starting a business -world tourist numbers are down - so the idea is put off for a while. Will remain in Kland for one more year collecting the capital, then re evaluate the situation.

Is that an online PHd? I dunno....won't it be a bit difficult to find a teaching position?

Not an English teacher, but I do live in Korea and am thinking about my post-Korea plans too.

My current pipedream is to go back home to America, go get all my biology prereqs on the cheap at a community college while studying for the MCAT, and then go to medical school. I would probably need to volunteer at a hospital first to show that I'm serious. I majored in something completely unrelated to medicine and I'm 25 now, which is kind of a late start, but maybe not too late, and I could actually see myself enjoying being a doctor and having the satisfaction of helping people, plus the pay is nice, and I will never have to look for work. And if I open my own clinic I can have flexible hours.

Also, when I get my black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu I want to open up my own academy and teach evening jiu-jitsu classes. That probably won't pay enough for me to quit my day job though. And I'm only a blue belt now so it will take a while longer.

For work, I could stay in my current industry (shipping and logistics), but it really sucks right now, every major shipping line has been losing at least like a million dollars a day for the past year, so no one's really hiring.

One thing to keep in mind is that the longer we are in Korea, the harder it is to get back into the western workforce (due to ageism, experience, and lack of qualifications)

It's a pure research based distance programme from where I got my BBA from (Nottingham Business School, UK). It's a bona fide programme and because it is purely research based from the UK (where research based Phd is the norm), it is widely accepted.

I've done my research on all the Phd programmes available and this is the best for me because of my young child and my need to be flexible.

Edited to clarify - I did both my BBA and MBA in-house.. just doing my PhD distance that's all.

Be an Economics teacher back home. Might as well use my degree for something related to its major.

I plan to work at a second rate job and share my "When I was in Korea..." glory-day stories with people who think a trip to someplace 4 hours away by car is a journey to the exotic.
