|
|
Im somewhat new at teaching. Ive been teaching elementary kids from 6-12 for 3 months. I am pretty good and the kids love me even tho I dont know how to play with them. I use some fun games once in a while. But sometimes theres a few classes where Im blank and have to get repetitive on boring stuff. Or when theres only 2 students and 1 is always quiet and boring.
I was wondering if theres places that will train teachers for a price to help me become even better so that class will always be enjoyable and they will learn well. The day will be good for them and myself.
Thanks in advance~! |

Teacher training is usually done in your home country. There are great resources on the net to help you develop the skills you already have.
I'm currently using EFL Classroom 2.0. The best training you get is from the school of hard knocks. It's best to go around the block a couple of times before you decide whether you need further training. Korean style training is often geared towards bilingual teachers and the Grammar Translation Approach. I don't know how useful that would be for you. |

Actually, the job discussion forum right here at Dave's!!! is a fantastic resource, once you filter out all the crap about not being paid on time or hating your job or dealing with a difficult co-teacher. Have a read through anything that looks vaguely relevant to developing your teaching methodology and there are often external links.
As the above poster said, EFL classroom 2.0 is also a great place to look for discussions, advice and articles.
Good on you for making an effort to improve your teaching. |

You might want to consider doing a CELTYL (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners) - that is if you're only interested in teaching children ~ if not there is also a course that is concerned with teaching adults. This kind of course is really well respected because it is certified and monitored externally by Cambridge University. Furthermore it will teach you a lot about the right way to teach EFL. I wouldn't bother with any online TEFL courses ~ the problem with these is that there is no observed teaching, a component that is absolutely essential to any kind of training.
I don't agree with the other posters that discourage you from doing anything but online research into teaching. Though I definitely agree that the internet has plenty of information on teaching, it's important to do more than just that. An in-person class will probably vastly improve your teaching and your professional marketability. |

Sorry, but I'm curious to know how I was "discouraging him from doing anything but online research"?
Thanks! |

You'd think that a country that imports 10,000 unskilled, unqualified young people a year to be "teachers" would have some sort of training program.
But, sorry, there isn't. Even if you are willing to pay for it yourself.
Just sing and dance with them, you'll be fine. |

Oh okay, I was just wondering if my post was ambigious.
To Mr Dorian, I actually agree that doing a course with classroom components would be very useful indeed. However, given the OP is three months into what I can only assume is a year long contract, I figured the internet was his best bet because of the time/cost restraints of doing a CELTA or CELTYL.
Now that's what I call practical! |

Yea for reals.
Ive spent countless hours reading forums and discussions and it has indeed helped me a lot. Maybe I can find someone to let me observe their class.
Thanks for your input everyone! |

If you can get a group of 6-8 together, I'll do it.
I'm fully teacher training qualified. MEd etc... Do this every day/week.
It doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. It is the middle men that make it so.
I'll give you a certificate and reference. Post course training. You'll just have to do a little work after the workshop in terms of a reflective component and teaching portfolio. Online discussion. Epik and SMOE will accept (not like others as claimed...).
I'll even host it and provide the coffee. That's how all other courses happen but on top of it - I can provide integrity and someone who knows Korean education. You don't need all this high cost. With 8 people, I can do it for 60,000 won each. More and the price decreases. My only point is - I don't have the time to organize this...
Cheers,
DD

How many classes? How long per class? Where abouts are you located? |

I'm in Gangnam, Seoul. But if others have a more convenient location, then I'm flexible, it's doable. It would be a whole day session and the morning of the next (for presentations of attendees). After the day and a half - attendees would undertake a number of selected readings plus submission of reflective online activities. After that is done, certificate would be sent (3 weeks later).
I've trained at many private and public organizations in Korea. My main point on this thread is to state that if others want it - reasonably priced professional development and certification can be had. It just takes someone organizing and also asking/approaching the right people. I really believe in teachers helping teachers - if you want something to happen, make it happen.
Cheers,
DD

| I'd be interested. What days would you be thinking of taking a class, DD? I live a little too far away from Seoul for weekday classes..... |
