I just started at a new hagwon. The director told me she wants me to teach my classes in Korean so the elementary students will not be "stressed out". I told her I thought this was a bad idea. Is this crazy or what? |

If you were hired with that in mind, I assume you can speak Korean, then that would be your job. I hope you are getting paid extra for this daunting talent.
If you knew nothing about it, then it's time to ask for more money. |

Korean might be OK for giving instructions at a very low level, but apart from that you're denying them exposure to English.
Let them talk to you in Korean, then recast it back in English. Slowly push up the amount of English you insist on from them. |

The best possible method to teach your students is for them to have an English textbook in front of them while you translate entire pages into Korean for them and then move onto the next page as quickly as possible. |

Don't forget to include obscure cultural references that have absolutly no bearing on the child's future (Including such public school gems as "Don't take off your shoes" and "Today is Thanksgiving Day") |

For your hagwon director, it is more important that the students and their parents (usually mothers) are happy. Having the kids learn English is of less importance.
This is just the way it is here. After 6-8 years of instruction, most of them will still be saying English-ee and never leave Korea except on a tour with a Korean speaking guide. Don't worry too much about it. |
