Out of curiousity, are there any of us out there who are part of a committee for Phd. dissertations?

I'm helping my co-t edit one. Even edited, it's terrible in English. The original content is very interesting but this style of translating is just wrong. You know the style, online translation with co-t translation/editing with foreigner editing. It doesn't give the original writing the credit it deserves.

Anyways, anyone out there who actually reads this as part of the candidates committee?

Is there even a Phd. committee?

Anyone know what's done with these papers in English?

What's the point of translating it?

I feel terrible handing back something that I know is not up to my standards as a whole but unless I want to re-write the entire paper, there's not much I can do but help with the sections he gives me.
