|
|
This happened to me today.
A university student was searching for me, and came out of an elevator just as I was walking to class (his class) from my office. There I was, standing at the elevator doors, only to be greeted by a cough in the face from about 1 meter away. As the student coughed, he belatedly put his hand over his face, and with a panicked look, stated, "Teacher, I am very sick. Fever and sick feeling. The doctor thinks swine flu! What about my final exam?!?"
Yes, there are students this stupid!
My first response was to back away and say, "Then don't give it to me! Why are you here? Why didn't you just call?!"
The student then realized how stupid of a mistake he made, and tried to apologize.
Dumb, dumb, dumb.
And my pregnant wife and I have been on pins and needles worrying about one of us getting this... wearing masks and every stupid little thing possible... only to have some sick kid cough directly in my face! |

You do realize he probably was faking it? College trick 101.
(With a twist: Coughing your face, exaggerating whatever cold symptoms he may have, invokes fear as the student knows well, given the H1N1 hysteria, and teacher will be less likely to be critical minded and missing the exam becomes a slam dunk)
Not so dumb, dumb, dumb.

Not this kid. The final is 2 weeks away. He was a mess, and virtually in a state of panic. It won't make any difference for him. He'll be long over the flu by then. I called him after class and spoke with his mom (she answered, although in Korean). He's not faking. |

Then why did he ask about the final exam?
Sometimes you seem so dense. But maybe I am. Care to explain... |

Oh.. that deserves some explaining.
Our final takes place over two dates -- two hours each day. I teach a job interview class, and each student, for their final, must have an interview with me. Their final interview lasts about 10 minutes, but completing them all takes me 4 hours. They can choose one of two weeks for their final, not having to attend the other. I allowed them the extended make-up week, which our university has built-in, so they could all get an interview. He missed class last week for an unrelated reason, and didn't understand the process. I had explained this the previous week. |

I get my face coughed in daily, no swine flu yet. The key is to have a strong immune system to prevent getting sick. People here seem awfully ignorant about how sickness is spread and cough on each other left and right. Or maybe they just don't give a damn about getting others sick. |
