We always assume that NK is independent and that China is simply the neighbor who doesn't want to see them fail.
Though is this really the case, or has Kim Jong Il become simply the figure head of a new vassal State?
One that will be financially supported by China and controlled. |

that's what the whole Northeast Project was about by Chinese academia working in conjunction with the government to re-write history in a multi-ethnic, regional way that puts all of north korea and parts of south korea shy of the Shilla southeast into the past nation of China
i've been telling koreans for years that china sure seems like the biggest threat to korean reunification, that japan and the u.s. have less at stake in preventing it than do the chinese, who never give up wishing to re-claim land once they've had it, and whom now are telling themselves that nortrh korea was part of china anyways
han chinese meet han korean, master and slave of the 22nd or 23rd century, just you wait
uigyurs and tibetians will be joined by koreans and laotians (i doubt vietnamese, but china's always wanted it) - oh sure, they won't loose their language like the Manchurians did, all peaceful and willing to assimmilate like, but speaking Mandarin and writing Chinese will be mandatory to an extent not matched by the Joseon Dynasty (the era of half-assimmilation efforts).
korea has through historical events both japan and america to thank for the strength of korean nationalism today
all this very non-PC with koreans |

By the same token it begs the question "is South Korea America's vassal state?". |

not my adult students and korean friends in rural Gyeongsangnam province
maybe in Seoul
hereabouts I hear: China is a friend and Japan has done no good, North and South Korea WILL re-unify only not too soon for economic reasons; Joseon dynasty was a good era for the Korean culture; etc |

Well, maybe moreso during the dictatorship years, when South Koreans were pretty much prevented(albeit by their own leaders, not the Americans directly) from electing a government that would ask the Americans to pull out their troops. I don't see that any such restrictions on South Koreans exist today.
But I think it does raise an intersting question: to what extent, if any, is Chinese expansionism vis a vis the Korean peninsula motivated by the perception among China's leaders that South Korea functions as an American outpost? Basically, are they worried that if they stop propping up KJI in North Korea, the regime would collapse and they'd possibly have American and American-allied SK troops right on their border?
Or are things like the Northeast project really just motivated by historical considerations about restoring China's rightful territory? |

The USA is no where near becoming an empire. Its a hegemony. The leader of many countries that agree that doing the same thing as the USA and working with the USA is best for them. Is the USA telling South Korea or South Koreans what they have to do? No. |
