I got back from Korea at the start of the month and have signed on with a different hagwon to start again in February. Problem being, my drivers license expires on Nov 6, 80 - I'm assuming this isn't something the embassy won't take care of and as it's the 5th year a new photo will needed to be taken at an MTO site upon renewal.
I couldn't find the info on the ministry web site, can I renew my license in February even though it doesn't expire in November? Is there a way to do it from within Korea? |

I don't know about Ontario, but I renewed mine a few months early in NL, while home on a vacation. |

I'm a bit confused about your post. what country are you in right now?
if you have a valid licence from any country then when you arrive in Korea just go to the motor vehicles branch and exchange for a korean licence.
it's good for 10 years.
when you return to your country just exchange it again. |

Well I'm in Ontario right now and am going back to Korea in February. I was wondering what process I should follow as my license is expiring in November while I'm in Korea.
A friend of mine told them I can write them and have them extend it by a period of up to 6 months if I'm out of the country which might be the answer, anyone go through this? |

Absolutely.
Went through the same thing last year in Ottawa. No problems if you are out of country (mine was seven months expired).
I did not have the renewal form (they had sent it to my last known address.) Just had to fill out a couple forms.
Again: no problem at all, no need for writing letters. |

You can let it expire and then renew it up to three years after the expiry date (if it has been expired for one to three years, you'll need the vision test too). If it has been expired for more than three years then you'll need to go through all the testing again. If you might be in Korea for longer than three years after your ON license expires, then you should exchange it for a Korean license before it expires. |

I'm in the same situation. My Ontario license expires April 2010, but I won't be back in Canada until September 2010.
So can I just walk into the ministry of transpo office with the form and get it renewed 6 months after the expiry with no problem? I heard something about if you don't get it renewed in a certain period you get bumped down to a G2, but I'm pretty sure thats complete rubbish!? |

Rubbish indeed.

Drivers Outside Ontario
Under the ministry's photo licensing program, you are required to have your photo taken by the ministry at licence renewal time unless your renewal application states that a new picture is not needed for this renewal. Renewals not requiring a photo can be processed by mail; otherwise, you must renew in person in Ontario. If you are out of the province at the time of renewal and will be returning within six months, you may be sent a one-time temporary driver's licence valid for up to a maximum of six months, to enable you to drive while you are away.
The ministry will need your driver's licence number, the length of time and reason for your absence, an out-of-province mailing address, and a copy of your driver's licence photo-card. You may send this information to:
Ministry of Transportation
Licensing Administration and Support Office
Building A, Main Floor
2680 Keele Street
Downsview, ON M3M 3E6
Fax: 416-235-4414
If you will not be returning within six months, please contact the ministry's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Call Centre at 416-235-2999 or toll free in Canada at 1-800-387-3445, for more information.
Drivers Who Will Be Outside Ontario When Their Driver's Licence Expires
Drivers whose licence will expire when they are outside Ontario can renew their licence 180 days before the licence expiry and before they leave the province. If you are eligible for this option, please attend a Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing Office to renew your licence. The licence office will print a driver's licence renewal application and the licence renewal will be processed at the same time.
Note: Drivers whose licence renewal requires a test as a condition of licence renewal must attend a DriveTest Driver Examination Centre to renew. |

Is Canada that complicated about everything? In the US you show up...get a new license. No big deal. If you're in Korea why does it even matter if you have a Canadian license? Doesn't even work here... |

If youre in Ontario right now, go get your license renewed right now before you go to Korea.
If your license expiresd while youre in Korea, then it's no big deal. When you return to Ontario, you can have it renewed on the spot.

I have a DL from NS. I arived in Korea in early 2005 and my DL expired 3 months later. I went home in 2007 and had it renewed without a problem. NS has a rule that states you can renew your DL anytime after it expires, for two years. After the third year you have to do the written and driving test all over again. Maybe ONT has a similar rule. |

Or you could just trade your Ontario licence in for a Korean one.
Canadians are exempt from the knowledge test, all you have to do is pass a 30 second medical and pay 11,000 won and you have a licence that's valid for 10 years. |

What about converting it BACK to an Ontario license? Will the gov't give me a G license straight up? Will my MVR report that I've been licensed for 10+ years still? This could be a potential insurance headache if only done for a year or two when coming back to Toronto. |
