Hi all,

Is this 4.5% pension taken off of your base rate or total earnings.

My workplace took pension off of my base salary (2.1), but I made 2.8 with overtime.

They say deductions are only on the base. I thought (or feel it should be). percentage (4.5%, matched equally by employer) on your total 'earnings', (2.8 ). Makes more sense I would think...

I've also got them giving me typed reciepts and saying "here's your pension reciept". But another teacher today said "they can't just give you any old piece of paper, even if it's dated and signed, they have to give you, or at least show you a reciept from the Pension Office, showing they paid them...".

Anyone know for certain? I'll definitely need to go to the Pension office to sort this out, (and likely Tax Office, to see if they're even paying that), but thought I'd put the questions here first.

God things can get weasely with these Koreans...(this is far from the first and only thing, but don't want to bore anyone, trust me on this though...).

its 4.5% of your base salary. it works the same way as your medical. your medical is also a percentage of your base that is why you don't pay more when you make more money with overtime. i also wish it wasn't this way since i'm american.......oh well.

UPDATE

I went to the Gangnam Pension office today and find out my employer hasn't paid any Pension-even for the one month they issued me a 'reciept'.

Also, the Pension Office said it is 4.5% of total earnings, not base salary only. Two different people confirmed it-and I asked many times. That said, I still don't say it's the gospel. But if they can collect it, all the power to them.

My employer also lied to them about my start date (which would make it look as if I worked less than a full year. My employer also got me issued an 11 month Visa because I had already worked one month by the time I did my run, "all legal, because we have 1 month to get our teachers an E-2", my employer said at the time.

It all make me think that they wanted to scam my pension money all along and then, (since everything since our contract show 11 months) try to screw me out of severance and my return airline ticket...

I also found out that my employer has a horrible reputation there.

I also had my boss go crazy, telling me I should have been teachung at that moment (true, but since the Pension office kept me there, handling my employers 'errors', for almost 1 1/2 hours, I say tough.

My employer is not happy now though, I can tell you that...

I want everything above board. I want all taxes paid, all pension paid, everything.

I won't get caught in any hokie lies due to m employers tripping all over themselves to screw me.

If anyone wants to find fault with me because my employer had me work illegally for a month....I'll deal with that too.

From what I understand, Pension, Taxes, and Immigration are totally separate anyways. (I won't be approaching Immigration for anything...)

One of the big things with my employer was also, "If we say you started in November (making me an illegal for 1 month), then we'll have to take taxes off...". They asked me this about 4 times, somhow thinking I'd say, "ooooh, forget it then, I don't want to pay taxes....", as if I mind-I'll get more back in Pension anyways.

Way too many games here.

Do what you've gotta do man. I am also doing something similar. I've already called my employer's crap on the taxes and told him I'd go and file for a refund at which point he told me he'd refund any overpayment (I'm still going to file for a refund for the last three years I've been in Korea).

I took care of pension myself by going to the pension office and signing up for it myself, so the bill will come in my name and I will make the payment. Until we have more than 5 full-time employees or until there are at least 2/3 of us that want it, the hogwon doesn't have to match the contribution. But that will also be changing soon.

It's a matter of timing to drive the point home...don't screw me over and give me what's in my contract. After all, I am fulfilling my contractual obligations so should he. If he's worried about losing face then...newsflash!!!...he's already lost it by screwing me over.

Cheers dude and good luck! Very Happy
