|
|
By now I expect that everyone on this sight has read the very unsettling report submitted to the Korean Human Rights Commission about the
stigmatization of E-2 visa holders in Korea. If you have not, please take the time to read it. Here it http://2009hunma358.blogspot.com/2009/09/1.html
I want to get this report distributed as far and wide in the Western media as possible. A friend of mine has sent it off to the British and Canadian embassies, and I thought it would be a great idea to send it to as many Western media outlets as possible. Korea needs to be shamed into changing its ways. I've already sent it to the Toronto Star with a brief background explanation. I would like as many people as possible to take the time to send it to their hometown newspaper (and/or embassy).
I for one am tired of being depicted as a criminal simply for being an English teacher in Korea. It's time to hit back. Please take ten minutes to mail this report to your home newspaper and/or embassy.
Enough is enough.
Please help me with this campaign.

I wonder why some newspaper editor would even care. Most people want to know about their home community and big important foreign events and sports. Even if it got printed it would be somewhere on page 48 buried between news of a bake sale and the new Lions Club going up on Main Street.
We are just simply not that interesting to the general public.
Add to that it's been done several times before. |

Mithrae, I've read a lot about the racial issues in Korea and i am truly shocked by it. I never thought there would be such discrimination. I think your right, enough is enough. Just because Korea isn't your home turf doesn't mean you can't make a stand.
We all belong to this world and i think it's ignorant and naive to ignore and think that this issue has nothing to do with us.
I mean come on. This could just be the start of something that gets much much worse. Do you want this racial behavior to spread? Where will it go next, who will it effect?? Ignoring an important matter like this is just plain wrong and stupid.
I have emailed the link you provided to a few friends in London who have taken an interest. One works for the daily news. She'll see what the editor thinks. No promises but......
Of course people are interested in matters around the world, not everyone is ignorant! Even if only a handful of people read it, well that's better than none.
Good luck to you! Your brave for starting this thread. |

I can't help but think your attempt to shame Koreans will backfire resulting in creating problems for future and existing foreign teachers. |

talk about redundant...I do admit that a lot of Koreans are reactionary when it comes to this kind of stuff. They see something in the news, assume it's credible and then fly off the handle. That being said, I wouldn't give much heed to a group such as that. I would trust in the Korean system to weed them out. It seems the author of the blog is taking steps to rectify what's going on. On a side note, I don't see why everyone is up in arms about a drug test. I had to have one done for my last job in the states and for several others. Who cares if someone else isn't required to. If you aren't doing drugs and you come up negative, you've proven your case. The funny thing about all this, as i was reading that blog toward the beginning when it's talking about how Korea needs to discriminate against foreignors to give the Koreans a chance at jobs, it reminded me of the reverse discrimination that goes on in the states with middle class white males and quote "minorities". Any idea how many minorities are favored over white males? If you are black, female, american indian, asian, white female, we have a scholarship for you! Sorry white males, you're going to have to compete for the other scholarships that we'll probably just give away to some minority anyway, good luck! A neighbor of mine (good family friend mind you) who says there's no way they would fire her from her work simply because she's too many minority points because she's a female of american indian descent. Retarded if you ask me. People have been fighting for "equal rights" for a long time, but it's to the point of reverse discrimination. Anyway, back to the subject at hand. I wouldn't worry too much about this whole issue. As they say, actions speak louder than words. Be an upstanding citizen and despite the reports sent out by this group, people who know you will tell just as many people that they know a foreignor who is one of the most upstanding people they know. Much more likely to have a greater impact than having the media come out and say, "ok, so those situations were fictional and merely to prove a point of what "could" happen." Doubt that would calm any mothers. That's my two cents anyway. |

The Koreans gave you job because of the color of your skin. They house you and the job you do is very simple. You re paid well for the responsibilities you have. Please point out the descrimination. Maybe you should go home , mount a campaign to enlighten the poor heathens to their faults. In fact if you stay you are a racist because you are being supported by a racist system. Just another white person whose job it is to civilize the poor brown masses. Take up the burden |

umm...correction. you aren't given a job because of the color of your skin, but the language you speak. Secondly, the one's offering jobs and providing housing aren't the people in question, the one's who are promoting racism are.
Thirdly:

This shows your own racist attitude toward whites. A bit hypocritical if you ask me. |

No, it usually is the color of your/my skin, but not always.
Language skills are secondary.
Why do you think people of color or Asian-Americans have so much trouble finding work? |

Can people please read the report in its entirety before commenting. If you have neither the time or inclination to read the report, please don't post. Read the report first. Then offer comment. After reading the report, remember that this group has the media's and the government's ear. That's scary, and something that should be rectified. I understand that the report is lengthy, but you can print it off and read it at your leisure, or simply bookmark it and read it in sections. But, if you're like me, once you start reading it you won't be able to stop. And if you are unmoved by the end of it, well I just don't know.
Please take the time to read it, then if you are as outraged as I am, take the time to send it off (with a brief background note) to your home media or embassy.
Thank you.

wasn't aware that they had issues finding work. especially since there are job postings out there specifically for korean americans. i speak in ignorance about that though, i really haven't heard anyone complain that they were turned down for a job because they are black or some other race. |

The embassies have made it very plain that they are not interested in getting involved in this kind of dispute or any other Heck even if you get jailed, the most you can expect is a visit and a list of lawyers to call.
The one thing you can expect them to go to bat for you, is if your passport is stolen. Apart from that, forget it. |

not that i'm saying that people shouldn't stand up for what's right, but i mean seriously. If the korean embassy were to forward on information about a group of people who were blogging racist crap about korea/koreans or even making movies to support their claims (as rediculous as they might be) do you honestly think that an american embassy is really going to do anything about it? there is still plenty of racist propoganda/sentiment in the US and other countries. I applaud your immense sense of duty to right the world's wrongs, but at the same time your zeal makes you sound a bit reactionary yourself. Knee jerk reactions aren't usually the right ones. |
