I'm thinking of applying to GEPIK. It would be my first time teaching and my first time in Korea. I'm from the great Canadian suburb of Mississauga, and the only thing that could make this place worse was if I didn't speak the language. There is nothing to do and everything is far away. I am looking to avoid the Korean equivalent at all costs. I am also considering going the Hagwon route. Rural areas for me are out of the question. I'd go out of my mind.

Bars, restaurants, sports, people, things to do, ease and speed of getting around - these are what I'm looking for. Any suggestions for locations through GEPIK? Or do I try the hagwon route in one of the bigger cities (Seoul, Busan)?

It's a crap shoot as to where you are going to be placed with GEPIK.

Has that changed now with GEPIK? When I was with GEPIK you could pick (within reason) where you wanted to work and if you wanted to be near a subway line. If they have took that option away then I wouldn't even bother with GEPIK. The one thing that seperated GEPIK from SMOE was that I had some say in where I ended up working. Not an unreasonable request. Evil or Very Mad

Sounds like you should be looking at Seoul or a sattelite city within easy rach by sub way or possibly even Busan. Of course Seoul and Busan are not serviced by GEPIK. There are a lot of decent sized cities within an hour or so of most places in Seoul.

I hear there is beautiful scenery and clean fresh air in Gapyoung, Youncheong, and Pochon.

"A satelite city within easy reach by subway" WOULD be GEPIK as SMOE only covers Seoul and anything outside of Gyeongg-do/GEPIK would be FAR...considering that there are places in Gyeonggi-do that are quite a hike from Seoul.

I know that and what I meant by satelite city are the ones immediatly surrounding Seoul, all of which are service by GEPIK. Cities outside of Gyeonggi would be provincial cities I think.

Thanks for the input guys. Unfortunately I just found out the reasons why my application for EPIK got rejected (which is why I started looking at GEPIK), and it is because I am on prescription medication for anxiety, which I have not had an issue with in a very very long time precisely because I take said prescribed medication. Can I expect this from GEPIK as well? Will hagwons also give me a hard time over this? I am quite healthy in both body and mind, and my doctor wrote a note saying so - but apparently that wasn't good enough for EPIK.

There is no need to tell them, don't tell your Korean employers anything that they have no need to know. Keep that one under your hat. Burdening yourself to Koreans is never a good idea.

Yes...if you tell them that you take medications...thats an automatic ding.

If you're sure that you can handle being abroad for a year and you're up to it...then omitting the fact isnt the biggest sin in the world.

That's what I figure. I'm in perfect shape and just take the meds. Haven't had any problems in years. Now I know. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Make sure you bring enough. Getting specialty meds here can be quite a chore.
