I know, this should be in the travel forum... but I'm not sure where that is, and I think I need to register for it.
I'll have a long layover in Taipei... like eight or nine hours. Can anyone recommend some things to do for a day or a night (not sure what time I'll be there yet)? Is the actual city near the airport at all, and easy to get to? Will I need to pay for a temporary visa to enter? Etc.
Thanks. |

I am actually going to be doing the same thing myself next week. However, I have 22 hours to kill. There is a hotel in the airport and a one night stay runs about 2800 for a single 3000 for a twin and 3500 for a triple. (in US dollars 87, 93, too high...)
Its pretty insane but we don't feellike waiting in an airport for that long. With the time you have I suggest waiting it out as a ride to the city is about 1 hour.
Does anyone know the name/contact info of any cheap motels???
We have talked to people fromTaiwan on our travels andknow places exist for 20 US/night but don't know how to go about finding out where they are. Anyhelp would be appreciated:) |

| Well I purposely went to Taipei for only 24 hours and it was plenty of time to see stuff. First, stay at the 8 Elephants Hostel - awesome. Then, I think its about a 20 minute cab ride to downtown, but go see TaiPei 101, and some of the temple stuff. Its pretty nice there, you'll like it. There are not that many attractions that you need much longer than 24 hours. |

| Stay at a hostel. I stayed at one and it was only about $25 per night. I can get the contact information if you need. The woman spoke really good English and the place was pretty nice. It was downtown, fairly close to Taipei 101 and right next to a temple |

Check out hostelworld, and as someone already said 8 Elephants Hostel is a good choice.
I was there last week on a tourist visa run and had done zero research before going there. At the airport there was a pamphlet for hostel called Taipei House with direction on how to get there so I stayed there for two nights. This place was pretty convenient as the airport bus drops and picks you up right outside the hostel. To be honest I would have chosen to stay at a different hostel had I done some research, so I'd recommend that to others.
The bus to/from the airport takes about an hour. For a day trip, I'd recommend taking the subway for transport around the city (called the MRT). Don't bother getting a daypass.. paying for individual rides will be cheaper.
- I'd start off by heading over to Taipei City Hall station (Blue line) to check out Taipei 101 and the nearby shopping.
- Go 3 stops West to Zhongxiao Fuxing station for even more shopping and department stores.
- Next, see some temples and hear the chanting at Longshan Temple Station. Nearby is the Red House where they were reconstructing old Taipei shops (beauty salon, drugstore, bars, etc). The Red House is within walking distance from Longshan Temple Station if you have a good sense of direction and don't mind passing through a shadier part of the neighborhood with Taiwanese prostitutes. If that's too much to handle it's right next to Ximen station.
- I didn't have time, but National Palace Museum was recommended to me. It's on the Red line near Shilin staion.
- Also, it was recommended that I go to the top of the red line at Danshui station to watch the sun set at the fisherman's wharf and pass through some older shops in the area.
- Last, don't miss the Shilin night market, the biggest night market in Taipei. It's also on the red line at Jiantan station.
*Hot Tip: There's a supermarket in the basement of Sogo department store at Zhongxiao Fuxing station that has many foreign food products not available in Korea. |
