Anyone ever see the movie Public Enemy (공공의자) 1,2, or 3 (they all follow the same basic premise)? Anyway, in each one, there are these big group fights of high school students, where two different classes from two different schools get together and fight with bare hands, or clubs or knifes, whatever.
I didn't believe that this stuff actually happened. I mean, a whole class, getting together, riding the bus to the other school, meeting at the gate with the other class waiting, then running into a giant battle with weapons. Just seemed too far out there for me.
Last night, pizza delivery guy near my house had some band-aids on his face. Apparently, he's 20 and a second year high school student at one of the more infamous schools around here. Even though he goes to this school, he speaks English pretty well and he's really cool with me, but I digress...
I asked about the band aids, he pulls one down to show this wicked cut on his cheek (probably should have gotten a butterfly or stitches), tells me that his class and the class at another school nearby had met out back of the station that afternoon and got in a fight. He and the other class leader had used knives and that's how he got the gash on his cheek.
I know he could be jerking me around, but I've got a feeling that he isn't. I know his school and yes, it's a bunch of thugs, he's 20 and in HS, and he showed me his knife (a sweet switchblade).
So the question is this: Have any of you seen an organized fight like this? Know anything about them? They happen at your school before? |

One of my friend's dads is a kind of "security administrator" for what is basically a juvenille detention school. He wears military-style uniform and his job description basically boils down to "ass kicker."
From what I gather, lots of guys show up to these brawls, but usually only a couple of them actually get involved in the scrap...their "leaders" kind of. The rest of them are usually too scared to jump in.
Fights are over quick.
They're not the drawn-out royal rumbles you see in the movies with 30 or 40 guys flying around breaking chairs over each other's heads. That doesn't happen anywhere. |

It's true, they've been doing it for ages. One of the IP group senior managers I used to work with had one of his fingers cut off at the knuckle from group fighting - he was the class leader. Didn't stop him from getting a good education and going on to work for LGE though. |

Koreans love organized fights,
Even in America.
Our high school I had this one Korean buddy. He organized a fight at our school. Wonderful. It was hilarious, or so I'm told, as I wasn't there to witness the scene. But it was the perfect harmony between barbaric and civil marriage one could see. Here they are, flying fists at each other. But if the other guy falls down he extends his hand to him to help him up. wow... wailing on a guy only to help him when he falls down.
I've even witnessed organized fighting at my own school. Two boys were fighting. It looked like a jousting tournament was about to go down, both took of their glasses quietly and softly. but then suddenly lept on top of each other like monkeys...
Barbaric yet civil. |

Maybe one of them stayed on the others couch and then stole his money? |

At my middle and highschool there was a lot of talk of having mass brawls with rival schools but I never saw it happen. There were plenty of fights among individual students though. Much more than I saw in the States.
I don't know why but Koreans love brawls and mass fights. Every movie has to have at least one scene of a bunch of dudes fighting. |
