I'm going home pretty soon for a visit, and am toying with the idea of buying either one of those HP, Toshiba, Acer, Dell, etc. cheapie laptops just to get the deal--they run from $350-700 and are way cheaper than the same laptops here. I would buy a Samsung or LG laptop if I didn't think I (along with the Korean public) was being raped with the price.

Anybody have any horror stories about them?

I bought a cheapie Toshiba notebook from Bestbuy online 3 weeks ago and it has all of the Toshiba warranty (paid $249). It is a celeron processor 3GB ram, Win 7, 250 GB HD. I'm not at home so can't give you the model number. I think this was produced specifically for Bestbuy, Walmart etc. BTW- you may want to buy online even in the states to avoid taxes.
I had mine shipped to my APO box here in Korea, shipping was $12, but within the U.S. free.
Keep your eye on techbargains.com because deals pop up then are gone from day to day.

Yeah, you can get killer deals if you pay attention to deal web sites. My favorite is slickdeals.net. Be careful, it's addictive! I buy way more than I need because of it (that's why I have 3 laptops for sale on this board ).

Oh yeah, and Dell has some really good deals. Some people say Dell computers are crap, but in my experience all laptops are about the same. I haven't had any bad experiences with Dells and I've owned 4 of them over the years.

The computers you can buy at Wal-Mart and Best Buy on sale are good deals, but they usually have low-res screens and poor battery life. If having a good screen and good battery life are important to you, then I recommend waiting for a deal on an HP dv6t, dv7t, or dv8t (they pop up every month or so) or a Dell. Remember, you get what you pay for!

Wal-mart generally doesn't sell top-of-the-line stuff, but offers decent deals on average computers. I wouldn't have a problem buying from them, if it does what you need.

I was given a $300 HP desktop from Wal-Mart once, and six months later the power supply blew out. What an amazing surprise that it required a particular model to replace it, which cost $350. It's like those $20 printers that cost $40 a month in ink. I don't think I've been in Wal-Mart in a decade when it wasn't 4am and I needed something urgently enough to allow myself to be ripped off in quality.

I bought my H-P dv6000 (I believe) white computer at Future Shop and was very happy with the service. You can negoiate a little with them and they threw in a bag, mouse, 3 year extended warrenty for 100 bucks, an awesome 8 colour printer with scanner for 50 bucks and took the time to get rid of all the pre-installed junk and re-install Windows under my name as administrator. All in all a good experience.
