Who is the genius in the suit who sits in his office and decides to screw everyone right in the scrotum. Some people have more vacation, some people don't, now thanks to Mr. Shiny Grey Suit everybody is in the same craphole. It is good to get this message out after the "application to re-sign" has already been submitted and I'm sure is held as a legal binding contract.

Why PS system? Why? I am trying. I have a girlfriend, I want to teach, I fulfill my duties and I just want to be treated humanely. What's wrong with the lowly foreign monkey clown assistant teacher not coming in and sitting at their desks all winter? I hear people on here that say, "well, dar, duh, der, it's in this paper with my signature on it..." I hate you. You weak sniveling sissy. 4 years ago contracts were funny pieces of paper I used for the cleansing of my anus. Last year one hundred people in Seoul had their contracts broken. Don't be a pansy waste.

The surplus of teacher's and the illusion that the PS jobs are good is making it a worse and worse contract. What do I do? Crawl back to my old hagwon. Work at a unigwon. Looks better everyday. Although I will be getting the high score in galaga online now thanks to this. Oh, and I can catch up on my TV shows. It's a good thing that I have to come to work I guess after all.

Great post.

I try to make deskwarming fun. I buy some popcorn on the way to work, fill a USB drive full of movies or TV shows, go up to my English lab and watch said TV shows and eat said popcorn. I have the uncanny ability to lock the door as well.

About all the other stuff, I agree. Its an easy job but the stress of having to do ridiculous crap that doesn't make any sense turns an easy job into a very stressful one.

So... I'm a gunna go teach in Japan next year and hope its better.

Gramps: I can't, it was also covered in the document.

Wav: Sounds like a nice theater expereince. People may say, "so what did you do this vacation?". "Oh, I just watched movies." It's ridiculous. You must come to work...and...uh...um...You must come to work.

Jaz: I have a great idea. Everytime someone posts anything on the job forum of Dave's I will just reply, "Welcome to Korea." That will be such good advice. It is also so cool and funny that everyone will start doing it and it will be immortalized on Dave's ESL. I think a witty remark like, "Welcome to Korea" is just something that never tires with age. Thanks Smile

Back in 2004/05 there were quite a few people that had nice long vacations. Some had nice schools, others were able to negotiate their own deal.
Some of them couldn't keep their mouths shut about what a good deal they had. Others who did not have such a good deal, complained (in many cases) directly to the head office. In some cases actual schools and foreign teachers were named as in "Well Johnny Smith down at Ho-Lee school doesn't have to desk warm, why do I?"

The head office, not wishing to deal with this day in and day out issued a sweeping mandate reducing all teachers' vacation time and now making desk warming mandatory.

Of course there are still a few people who manage to get long vacations (usually by fudging the numbers and with the school's permission). However they seem much in the minority these days.

Bottom line. If anyone is getting a good deal, they'd be best advised to keep quiet about it.

So you can partly thank some of your fellow foreign co-teachers as well as Mr. Grey Shiny Suit.

I am now outraged that others have doors that lock. I will be talking to someone to get this changed across the country so that all have to suffer with random barge-ins as I do! Wink

Indeed. And I'd imagine that many of the teachers whinging were only here for a year, and jealous of people who had created more comfortable situations over time. This is why I only discuss my job 'benefits' in the vaguest of terms.

That's a big part of it, but I overheard that the education office became upset with foreigners requesting to work camps at other schools (or, gosh forbid, working illegally at hagwons). The whole point of putting foreigners in public schools was to kill hagwons and convince parents they don't need to spend money on private education -- having a bunch of foreigners around with nothing to do for 2-3 months per year didn't match their plan.

There was also a great deal of jealousy amongst certain faculty who wished they could enjoy all of that vacation. Remember, a Korean public school employee is considered a "government official", and is required to report any time they leave the country.

Having a good relationship with these officials is the key.

I don't understand the whole jealousy thing. Obviously the Korean teachers have never had their advantages pointed out to them.
Lets add up the points:

Points in NST's favour:
1) Don't work Saturdays
2) Not required to attend meetings
3) Not required to make countless reports and paper-marking.
4) Get a free appartment.

Points in KT's favor:
1) Get paid more.
2) Get multiple large bonuses every year.
3) Have promotion and pay increase prospects.
4) Have much more vacation time.
5) Teach less classes.

Obviously the KT's have a much sweeter deal overall. These new regulations will simply increase the disparity.
